As we know, the ability to read a device such as the Meenova is broke after the 4.4 upgrade. What are people using to workaround this? I'm using USB stick plugin for Total Commander file manager, but it doesn't work for all file managers. Anybody using anything else that accomplishes this?

Maybe not totally broke...I'll post a quote from a friend, but I can't amplify on anything he says since I don't do mods on my devices *AND* I don't have a Meenova to experiment with...here's what he said:

"Just an FYI for those with the Meenova SD adapters - you CAN use them in custom recovery. It shows up as a USB-OTG . In twrp, you just click the bar that says "Internal Storage" and a drop down appears with the choice. Don't try to navigate there in the file explorer like you would booted in the OS"

Does it make any sense for you?

Doesn't really make sense to me. Using a plugin or an app is much easier

The .JPG file up top is the file I moved from phone to my Meenova.

No issues at all with Nexus Media Importer. I've tried a lot of apps and NMI is by far the best available IMHO.

    Great news, Thanks!

Why is Google attempting to block the use of memory cards? I read somewhere that manufacturers are not using them anymore to avoid paying royalties to MS, but why make it difficult to use USB OTG? I bought the Meenova to use when I don't have a signal, like flying or up at the cabin. If I had a signal I wouldn't need the Meenova.

Hi, can this only be formatted by a computer? (My card came in exFAT and when I plugged it in it said it has to be formatted in FAT32 etc.).

Not sure if it matters but I'm on Verizon. I've heard of some carriers blocking certain apps.

Thanks... I wonder if that's why I didn't install it on the Boost Mobile line..

weird, i searched for it, and it was an auto-complete and popped right up. Maybe it is a carrier thing. I am on Sprint.

It couldn't be a carrier thing then because the phone that can't find it is on Boost Mobile...

I just downloaded it last week. And they billed me two or three times but I didn't call the bank about that yet.

Thank you for the feedback. I'm glad to know it's still there.

Does this only work on a rooted phone? And can some do a step-by-step for us non-techy people? Thanks!

It will work on both but your unroofed phone needs to support USB OTG. On their web site they list devices it WON'T work with.

I found it finally by searching my apps where it still didn't turn up the first couple times I looked. I'm wondering if this is because this phone has onboard SD? But that doesn't make sense. And it's running 4.1.4 or such. Anyway over 4.1 which is required so I don't see the problem.

And now the screenshot it missing. It said "not compatible with your version" or such.

Step by step (let me know what I'm skipping):

Put your card in the Meenova reader with the metal piece pointed downward and the printed side facing up. Push till you feel it click just slightly.

Plug it into the USB port.

Use a file manager to access the files on the card. I use ES File Explorer.

Tap on any files you'd like to play and choose the player, just as you would with folders on the phone.

Enjoy your files on the card.
    ------

To write to the card (copy files onto it, freeing space on the phone):

You'll need something like Nexus Media Importer.

Tap the menu button on the top right

In Preferences, check the box for "write" to the card.

That's it. You'll just select the files to copy (by exploring in the top pane), and then tap the arrow on the top right of the pane and select copy, and the file will copy. The Meenova will blink blue while copying rather than the solid blue light.

After a file is copied it appears in the bottom pane.

When you're done with the card, tap the top right Menu button in Nexus Media Importer and tap Disconnect.

And that's it. Let me know what I skipped.

Oh, also back up important data in computer, not just card. Also back up smaller files to a cloud service.

If you get a 64 gig card, it has to be formatted to FAT32 before use with a Nexus 5.
