People need to look past 5.0.2 vs. 5.1 when it comes to bug fixes.

It seems that early soak tests are revealing that L is pretty buggy on the OG X. Go to xda forums and see for yourselves. I can wait until it's ready, as I'm real happy with KK. I need my phone to work right, first and foremost.

Weird how the first gen Moto X was one of the first devices to get KitKat, but they're struggling to get a stable Lollipop out. Good thing I really only want Lollipop for looks, as there aren't really any new features I care about. It makes waiting a lot easier.

Is just part of dealing with a custom chip set, unfortunately

Don't believe everything you read. People post when there is something wrong but don't post when there's nothing wrong. I'm not part of the soak test but I loaded the build and I am glad I did not wait as my battery life was atrocious on kitkat .

Interesting. Hopefully we'll be one of the first to have 5.1 At least KK is smooth as can be for me.

    via Matt Jones of Motorola:

The truth is, the software is ready when it's ready -- I know that can be difficult to accept, but it's true. We have to develop and test it. If something doesn't work, we have to take the time to fix it, and we can't know what issues may arise. Our schedule may indicate a week, but the software may require a month. This is why we don't give dates.

We're working as fast as possible to provide quality upgrades to all eligible devices globally.

I can't agree with that quote more. You either get it quick and then have to patch it or you get it right slow but it's the first time. If anything, this shows Motorola's commitment to quality that they did a soak and found it to be too buggy so they pulled it back to re-think. This is EXACTLY the reason I've said before (and will say again), the Moto X is a MUCH under-appreciated device. People have written off Motorola in the past for slow or nonexistent updates but SOME of that was Android's fault (GB on the OG Droid, or not on it actually). They're actually putting in the effort, showing progress but also revealing that it's not quite ready for general release and delaying it, props to them for that. Also props for making the decision to dump the efforts they put into 5.0.x and go right to 5.1 at this point.

Good for you. No thanks, I'll wait. Check the bug report thread and tell me that it's perfect. Btw, my battery life on KK is fine, and my phone is working perfectly. Why would I want to jeopardize that? I'm a fan of Lollipop, as I used to run it on my Nexus 5, but it's obviously not ready for all Moto X users at this point. As a matter of fact, those that volunteered to get L are just pre-beta testers for Motorola so that they can fine tune it. It may work fine for you, but I've seen enough bug reports to know that it's not quite ready for prime time. One other thing: I have the 1058 version which can't be unlocked. So I couldn't install L if I wanted to. I have to wait for an OTA.

Mine is pretty bad on KitKat as well. How much did yours improve?

I just read the update for the original Moto X will now skip 5.02 and go strait to 5.1. The past week I have been using the Nexus 6 since Motorola upgraded my xt1053de.

It first came with 5.0 and then after a few days I update to 5.1.

I can tell you there is a significant difference between the two. I would have downgraded to 4.4 if I could because the initial release of lollipop was eye candy but not as smooth and well oiled as 4.4.4 .

The longer wait to 5.1 should be well worth it.

Not much. It is better but with my usage it's hardly noticeable. I do get good breakdown what apps are showing up the battery.

I gained 30 mins -1hr SOT on my regular daily usage which to me is quite significant. On KitKat I'd hit around 2h30 SOT and it was done; on Lollipop I had gone to 3h40 before but then again that is also an achievable result on KitKat but not for me. That battery life improvement and the new active display from 2014 were big improvements for me; definitely not going back to KitKat ever. It runs pretty flawless for me performance wise.

Yeah, 5.0.2 is pretty buggy for a lot of people. 5.1 seems to have fixed a lot of issues. But I heard Motorola is skipping work on 5.0.2 and going directly to 5.1

Motorola has basically confirmed that Moto X (both generations) will definitely be upgraded to 5.1 earlier this week. Good news in my opinion. They haven't said when the update will be rolled out though.

But I have an ATT unlocked X using an mvno for my carrier. So I don't know if the ATT versions will take longer to get it. But I'm pretty sure the developer editions will get it sooner.

I have two VZW Moto Xs, one's a Motomaker and the other's a Developer Edition. The latter is rooted, and on KK already has better battery life than the stock one (though the stock isn't bad, considering it's more than a year old too). When the update rolls out I'll probably take the 5.1 OTA on the regular model first to see how it runs, then reflash to stock on the DE to take the update on that after trying it out.
