I have Sprint service, so I have between 6 months and never to get Lollipop... I have the developers options turned on, and I can choose between Dalvik or ART. Should I just go ahead and switch the ART on now, so I won't have the extra step if we ever get the update?

I don't think it makes a difference. I was using Art and it still optimizes the apps before you can use it. In fact there is a bug where if you reboot while plugged in it will optimize the apps again!

Many threads on this dating to the leadup to Lollipop. It is debatable whether ART inside KitKat will do very much, especially since many apps weren't written to take advantage of it in that setting. But with a good backup, you can always try it out and go back to Dalvik if you're not happy.
