I have an XT1095 currently rooted and running Android 5.0. I have gotten the OTA notification to update to 5.1 but haven't done it yet. I thought I have to flash back to stock (5.0, right?, because that's what it came with) before doing the OTA. But can I just get the 5.1 files from the Motorola Support Forum and flash those? That way I won't have to unroot, flash stock, ota, re-root. Thoughts? (I appreciate your help in advance!)

There have been sporadic reports on XDA of folks unrooting via supersu and successfully taking the OTA. I think the key factor is whether you have modified any system files.

Short of that, yes, you can download the 5.1 factory image from Motorola, flash, and then re-root if need be.

I haven't modified any system files that I know of...never used and frameworks or anything.

Do I have to flash back to stock if I download the 5.1 factory image? Or can I go right into flashing 5.1?

If you intend to take the OTA, you must unroot. If you do so and the update fails, this means that you did, in fact, modify a system file. The only option at that point will be to flash the factory 5.1 and re root. Sorry.

I agree and understand that if I'm going to take the OTA I have to unroot, reflash stock, etc. But what if I want to bypass the OTA and download the 5.1 image directly from Motorola's website. Do I have to unroot and go back to stock before I flash that?

No, you don't. But the act of flashing the entire firmware will of course eliminate root.

But, if you didn't modify any system files like you said, I'd say you have an excellent chance of doing this:

    1. Unroot
    2. Take OTA
    3. Reroot
    4. Done
Worst case scenario is the OTA fails which forces you to flash everything anyway. It could save you time.
