My understanding was that the opaque dots on the bottom corners of the face, as well as the one next to the camera were IR or proximity sensors (can't remember which). One benefit of these is that is "senses you coming" to wake up the active display. You can also wave your hand over the device to achieve this. I have been successful in doing this if my hand waves over the earpiece end of the phone, but not the bottom. To confirm, if you put the phone in front of you on a table in a landscape orientation. With you hand hovering a couple inches above the table, wave your hand in from the side over the earpiece end of the phone. Mine wakes the active display. If I do this from the other end, it does not. Can anyone confirm this behavior?

Normally I'm picking my phone up, so it doesn't matter, but when its in my car dock, I have to wave my hand up to the top of the device or jiggle it to reveals the active display an unlock it.

I've noticed the same thing on mine. It only works if I wave my hand over the entire phone or only the top.

1" off the device, only coming from the top is consistent.
2"+ off the device, both sides work equally as quick.

I know this was listed as a "not really intended" feature on previous models. I'm sure they're used for on-body detection and other Moto magic.

It was more "not really intended" on the 2013 X. The 2014 had the IR sensors for attentive display and wake on approach. The Pure continues with what they started on the 2014 X.

I see what you mean. I now use the Gandalf move, when he tries to exorcise King Theodin. "I release you..."
