Mail Client issue with gmail over wifi moto x Pure

Has any one tried using new mail clients (since google disabled the native client and left us with gmail only) and find that it wont connect to gmail accounts when over wifi? I was able to use blue mail with no issues but when I used mail-wise and k9 it didnt connect to gmail service. I prefer to use it since it had the gestures of swiping to delete my emails and better convo grouping.

This appears to be an issue with only certain mail clients and over wifi on lollipop. Any ideas?
