Re: Post pictures taken with Motorola X here

Has anyone tried side loading the Google Play Edition Camera apk yet? I would hate to lose the ability to take photospheres once in awhile.

Those photos really do look washed out... Definitely looks like a downgrade from my Gnex... I don't mind holding the camera steady for a shot as it is just good practice in general.

I think the GS4 has taken another step in the lead in my grades for all these phones.

@All the moto x owners:
Can anybody take a picture with a 3th party application?

All reviewers argue that the washed out pictures are software related, so maybe its in the stock moto x application....

just to pipe in. Marques Brownlee said there was nothing he could find to make it work. also to add my 2 cents, from everything i've heard, no motorola camera that was bad was ever fixed with a software update. to me personally it would make no sense that if it were a simple software fix they woulda just neglected to apply it to the motorola. Assume the worst in making your choice, that camera will stay as is.

A major issue seems to be from post-processing in my opinion, albeit the sensor and lens aren't the best they are not bad.
If you see some review sites like AnandTech you will see some good pictures taken by the Moto X yet a majority remain washed out, bad processing of the details.
What they captured with their cameras was pretty much the same results I got when I used the moto x for a day.

Before you look at the pictures: Please ignore the colors. Pay attention to the details, the sharpness, the contrast, as well as focus. It's sometimes realistic, and takes decent pictures but there's this fuzziness about the details that looks like bad post processing to me, but again I am not familiar with their this type of sensor so it may just be a trade off.
(and yes they were taken at the same time, not in different times of the day).

Yet the Moto X is sometimes capable of something like this (notice the sharpness, and good focus while keeping crisp detail despite the black plastics (anyone who does photography knows it is difficult for a lens/camera sensor to capture black on black):

I have little to no experience with the Moto X's sensors (Anand goes a little bit in dept here) so I am unsure if these can be fixed with a kernel or if it's a sensor trade off. Which imho isn't that great in low light scenarios.

Edit:
Now that I remember this camera reminds me an awful lot of the Lumia 920's camera. The fuzziness in details when you zoom in.

Yeah I did yesterday, works fine. Pics still don't look that great, but photosphere works, gives you an extra gallery app though.

Re: Post pictures taken with Motorola X here

For me the moto x photos looks fine as I don't require stellar photos to be printed. Subjects are usually locations and family life which it seems fine for. I usually take multiple pics on my cells anyways turning turning back to amateur mode(excludes sports photography), rather then setting up my shot/composing and getting it done right the first time for fine art photography. 98% of my photos on my cells stay on my cells so viewing them on a tiny 5 inch screen isn't so bad to look at. I use my trusty canon 1DC and Arri Alexa for my professional work which do make it to my editing bay.

moto cameras have always been their achilles heel. its a shame they can't figure out how to produce a phone with a good camera.

I agree, and that's the only thing keeping me from switching to it from an S4 or One. It's just really important to me.

I'm in the same boat. I wish moto would come out with a phone with a maxx battery and a good camera for once.

I'll catch a few outside this evening.

Sent from my XT1060 using AC Forums mobile app

Edit: Weird, that picture looks much better on my phone. The orange is much brighter, actually all the colors are. And it's not because the brightness is turned up, it's around 40%.

AMOLED screen....saturates the colors, brightness won't matter much in that case.

The pictures aren't that bad. This is with HDR on Auto. Is world beating? Not really. Is it the worst camera ever? Not even close. It's infinitely better than the Nexus 4, and just a step below the Lumia 920.

Those pictures are taken with HDR on? IMO they're not great if they're HDR photos. The highlights in the street photo are completely blown out and lack detail. The bottom photo is a little better but still retain that "washed out" look that people have been talking about. There's vibrance and saturation to other smartphone camera photos (iPhone 4S+, One, Galaxy S3+) that isn't there in the Moto X.

I'm a cinematographer by trade and I'm obsessive about the pictures I can take with a smartphone camera. I've seen better, and the photos that I've seen taken with the Moto X leave a lot to be desired by smartphone standards. Decent phone, meh camera.

Auto. I'm not sure if HDR was actually being used. And yes, of course there are better cameras, wasn't saying anything else. But it's not horrible.

I believe the X will append "HDR" into the file name when it applies. I'll have to go double-check that.

I'm in the same boat, but its a cell phone first really. Do you use your cell camera to make professional prints or view images on the big screen?. All that saturation is internally processed and me being a purist would rather have a flat image that is gradable as long as I can push and not break the codec. Then again, they are just photos from my cell phone and will rarely be more then web content at 72dpi. Yes, I love great pictures also, visit the gallery I worked on at the mgm grand hotel casino "Jeff Mitchum" and also at the Belagio. I am the Director/Cinematographer for MGM Grand and all events/ UFC/Top Rank/Billboard Music awards.. you name it. I love great quality right out the gates, but I guess to each his own. I seriously can not think of one device that has it all. There always seems to be a trade off with technology which in turn helps companies be competitive. I distinctly remember being pissed off about the arri alexa costing over 350k originally but have since overcome its shortcomings.

What does all that have to do with the fact that the X has a sub par camera compared to phones released almost half a year before it. No one's asking for the camera to be perfect but why can't it at least be as good as the s4's or one's?
