I just sent a text on the computer using connect and in my phone I see that it broke it up into three texts, the first two of which have a similar number of characters (152 and 153). Is there a character limit when texting on Connect?? If so that is strange, and annoying. Wish I knew that ahead of time.

I think there's an issue.

"1234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890"

On my phone using the Motorola text messaging app, this looked like one message.

I then sent a message longer than 160 characters from the Chrome extension:

"1234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890ABCDEFGHIJABCDEFGHIJABCDEFGHIJABCDEFGHIJ"

It was split into two messages, but not at the 160 character limit.

The first part went out as:

"123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890123"

The second part went out as:

"4567890ABCDEFGHIJABCDEFGHIJABCDEFGHIJABCDEFGHIJ"

It appears that for SMS messages larger than 160 characters, Motorola Connect is splitting them off at the 153 character mark.

Thanks for confirming. That defeats much of the purpose of Connect since obviously using the computer would be more useful for longer messages. WTH Motorola??

It doesn't actually.

As a standard/protocol, SMS is limited to 160 characters. Phones get around this in one of two ways.

1. The text message is broken up into multiple parts and each part should be 160 characters.

2. Switch the SMS to MMS to allow for more characters.

I suspect that in the case of Motorola Connect, Motorola is going with route 1 but it's stopping at 153 to add something like "(1/2)" or "2/3" but that's not getting added.

I believe that Motorola Connect actually sends the messages from your phone so it's limited to the technology in use there. It's the SMS app on the phone that breaks it up, not Motorola Connect.
