Moto X screen is damaged beyond use. Can I connect the phone to an external monitor/keyboard/mouse?

AC Question

My 2-year-old dropped my Moto X phone yesterday and the screen cracked, and the LCD touch screen is now basically black with some stripes across it, and the touch screen doesn't work at all. So basically, the phone powers on, but I can't do anything at all on it. I have some apps that I would like to back up, but most transfer tools require that you can at least go into "Settings" on the phone. I can do NOTHING on the phone. Is it possible to connect the phone to an external monitor/keyboard/mouse to control the phone? Or am I wasting my time?
