Anyone had an issue with their screen suddenly going bezerk?

So last night as I was waiting for my mom's plane to arrive, I was sitting scrolling through the book of faces, and my phone's screen all a sudden flickered, pixelated, streaked, then darkened/inversed colors, then went black, then came back on.

I power cycled it (as if that would help) and closed all apps. It WAS low on battery so I charged it. But the screen remains the same.

Do you all think this is indicative of a failed LCD screen assembly, bad connection TO the screen, or a problem on the motherboard side?

My first thought would be a loose connection -- have you dropped the phone recently? Nope, I haven't dropped it recently, I'm generally very careful with my phones. Although I did buy it 2+ years ago so it's probable I dropped it at some point.

I did call around up here and went to one of the more reputable cell phone repair shops up here. The tech claimed it is an LCD screen failure. They actually had a screen assembly in stock, which he claimed was OEM like quality, now cheap stuff.... so we'll see how it comes out. $130 cheaper than a new phone.
