As the title says, my brand new Moto Z3 Play won't update to Android 9, which came out for it in June of 2019, a year and a half ago. I always update my phones over WiFi with no sim card in them, don't do all the personal settings, just go in and completely update the os and security patches, then factory reset them and put the sim card in and set them up for use.

My Moto Z3 Play did three security updates, which took it to January 1st 2019 and then stopped. The next update should have been Android 9 combined with a security patch, but it refuses to go any farther. I just set my wife's Moto G6 up the same way about a year ago and it updated flawlessly...and it's currently running 9 on the September 2020 security patch... exactly where the Moto Z3 Play should be.

I did read on the Lenovo forums that the Z3 Play might need the sim card in to get the remaining updates, so I'm going to try that next. But it doesn't make sense that both the Z3 Play and G6 came out at roughly the same time, got the same updates, but yet one updated perfectly, and one only updated part way. By the way I'm on AT&T post paid, and both the Z3 Play and G6 were purchased directly from Motorola unlocked.

Thanks for any help you Moto Z specialist's can give me ;)

Did you get it directly from Moto, or from somewhere else? If the latter, do you know if it was originally intended for a specific carrier?

Nope B, got it unlocked directly through the motorola website. I know most folks put the sim card in first then update, but I always factory reset a new phone after updating everything, and I also like to have the new phone completely ready to go before I swap sims so there's no lapse in phone service, and I can take my time setting up the new phone while still using the old one.

Basically I'm lazy about setting up a new phone and like to break it up over days vs one whole evening  :p

Try with a SIM card and let us know if that works. I've always updated with the SIM and SD card in.

Thanks Ref, I'm going to try that next and I'll let everyone know how it goes, maybe it'll help someone else down the road ;) And I'll post up whatever solution I eventually find.
