As Verizon Moto Z2 Force is starting to get Pie those who bought the discounted (or full price) AT&T version will be stuck on Oreo. I was thinking about why AT&T would squash the upgrade and one reason might be their 5G Evolution indicator.

The Z2 Force has the necessary hardware to qualify for AT&T's 5Ge indicator and perhaps AT&T wanted that included in the Pie upgrade. (It has added it in the Samsung and LG models that were upgraded to Pie.) That would also be in conflict with Motorola's push to be first for real 5G with their Moto Mod which could be attached to the Z2 Force with Pie.

I can see the confusion if people got 5Ge with no Moto Mod on AT&T while others needed the 5G mod to get 5G UltraWideBand on Verizon. Without any other Motorola phones sold by AT&T qualifying for the 5Ge indicator both parties might have agreed that it would be better not to upgrade and AT&T forgetting the Z series.
