Droid 2 global won't let me sign in to Google acct

I was wanting to use my old Motorola Droid 2 global as a WiFi only phone for my grandkids. I did a factory reset and got past the activation screen. Problem is I can't get into my Google account. I sign in and it says "Can't establish a reliable data connection to the server". I've searched for answers. No luck. Tried several suggestions. Please help. Thanks.
