Does this phone really not have a native application for exploring the file system? I mean general things like copy some pictures from one folder to the other, or clean up my downloads folder.

I can of course download one from the google store, but they either have adds or don't have all the features i'm used to. Coming from a Motorola Droid Bionic with Android 4.1 - had a "files" app built in.

Welcome to Android Central! Not all devices have a stock file manager, because there really is no Android stock file manager. For example, the Nexus 7 does not come with any, either. I like Total Commander, because it's free, ad-free, and powerful.

Thanks, I'll have to try those. My favorite feature was to be able to use the "share"(upload to drive, sms, email, facebook, etc) command on any file. I may have to try and get the .apk from my old bionic and see if will install on this phone - not likely though.
