Droid Mini Speaker phone works but not regular speaker

My wife broke her screen. So we bought the screen replacement that replaces a lot of the insides. Her brother, who sort of knows what he is doing and has done it before replaced the stuff for us. When I had the phone put back on my wives account, it almost worked right. Everything works except for one thing. When on the phone, the other person can hear me but I cant hear them, unless I switch over to speaker phone. Can anyone point me in the right direction here. Is something else broken now? Can it be remedied easy? Thank you.
