I recently traded in my Droid Turbo (with amazing battery life) for the Droid Turbo 2 after the Verizon rep couldn't get it to turn back on. Sadly, my battery life with the 2 is quite unimpressive.

Is there anyway I can fix this myself or do I have a defective unit? I have attached screenshots.

    Thank you in advance.

Welcome to Android Central! Charge up to 100%, then let it drain to 20-30% with normal usage, without charging in between. Then show us:

    1. The main Settings>Battery screen.
    2. The fullscreen battery graph screen (which shows Awake time and Cell Signal Strength).
    3. The Screen category (to see total Screen On time).
    4. The Cell Standby category, if present (to see Time Without Signal).

I've heard from others that the Turbo 2's battery life is far less impressive than the previous Droids (like the original Turbo and the various Maxx's), so there might not be anything wrong with your particular phone.

So you're saying 5.5 hrs on a battery might be normal?

Look at the ratio of your SOT to the time you've had it off the charger. Your screen has been on nearly the entire time except for 8 minutes, so I think this is perfectly normal. It sucks, but the screen on this phone drains the battery like a mofo. I get about an hour, give or take, of SOT every 20% on mine. However, standby battery drain is great so when you put your phone down for a bit your battery life will increase dramatically, and will certainly last more that 5.5 hours. 5.5 hours of SOT is par for the course for this phone.

Yesterday I used the screen for almost 5 hours. When I put the phone on the charger at bedtime after it had been off the charger for 18 hours, there was 68% charge remaining. The Turbo 2 has been a great phone, and I haven't seen a single one of the many battery life complaints that seem to take up millions of threads on this forum.

I let my battery run down to 0% and charged this last night so its doing a lot better now but not quite as good as others.

There is a lot of Awake time, which seems to be concentrated during the periods when the screen is actually off. Can you show us the list of battery usage by app? That might give some idea of an app that is misbehaving and keeping the phone awake inappropriately.

I'd still want to further optimize the phone configuration to reduce unnecessary battery drain, but here's a consideration I'd offer to put this in perspective. I noticed this myself because I was panicking to see similar stats initially. Here's my thought:

I believe that the way these stats and the forecast remaining battery life are reported is being unduly influenced by your usage since you just took the phone offer the charger.

Forgetting GSam for the moment and just looking at the Android approximation of battery use: you've had the phone off-charger for 2h 50m. In that time, you've had the screen on for 1h 38m == 57.6% of the time. If your usage since coming off charger remains consistent for the remaining 6 hours of forecast battery life, this would give you approx another 3.46 hours of screen-on time, for a total forecast screen-on time of approx 5 hours. That's not bad at all, but you can probably do better.

Still seeing a lot of awake time on your phone, and GSAm is showing that 34% of the charge has been consumed by "App Usage" - something to consider and study a bit more closely on your phone.

    For comparison:

I leave bluetooth and Wi-Fi turned on all the time on my phone, and I have location services on constantly. I really don't want to have to worry about compromising my use of these conveniences when the phone is so capable -- and this hasn't been a problem for me. I have screen brightness at about 45% - not because I'm trying to conserve battery, but because I like the way it looks; I only crank it up brighter if I expect to be outside for a while in bright daylight. I also have adaptive brightness turned on.

I have Sleep set to activate after 30 seconds, but I also have a habit of tapping the power button briefly to turn the screen off any time I'm doing using the phone. Under "Attentive Display" I have both "Stay On..." and "Battery saver mode..." checked.

I only have a relatively small number of apps disabled:
    • Amazon Kindle
    • Amazon Appstore (I get my apps via Google Play)
    • Audible
    • Calendar (I use Google Calendar instead)
    • Caller Name ID
    • Cloud
    • DT Ignite
    • Message+
    • NFL Mobile
    • Slacker Radio (I used Google Play Music all access / family)
    • VZ Navigator

I do NOT have Facebook or FB Messenger installed. I could probably disable several more of the apps that VZW installs by default, but my battery life has been generally excellent, and the "urgency" to improve on the current state is just not there. I get several hours a day of screen on time and simply don't worry about limiting my usage -- just not an issue. I have Nine email client handling about 60 to 80 emails a day (exchange server / corporate) on a push basis, and GMail managing anywhere from 50 to 100 in a typical day. Amazon shopping and Amazon music are active. I use Google Play Music extensively. The Delta (airlines) app is active. Guardian, Flipboard and Google News & Weather are always updating in the background. I use Nova Prime (at the moment!) as my launcher. Numerous apps installed. Google Docs / Drive is actively syncing in the background, as is MS Office via apps like Word, Excel, Powerpoint.

With all this - I'm probably getting about 5.5 to 6 hours screen on time -- although I have yet to run down the battery before I go to sleep at night, and actually haven't gone below about 20% yet -- more typically about 30% to 40% remaining at night, with total forecast battery life at about 36 hours. I don't have any urgent need to test this, and so I just drop the phone on a wireless charger before I go to sleep.

    Thank you Jon,

I got nervous because my phone got down to 30% and I didn't have a charger it would not be near my charger anytime soon.

That 34% App usage was due to 9.5% Android System, 4.6% Kernel (Android OS), 3.3% Google App, 2.4% Google Services, 2.2% phone, 1.1% Chrome, Cloud, & System UI, respectively and 8.9% everything else.

Does anything jump out at you?

FWIW, if you are talking on the phone with the display off, it will report the phone as being awake. That is normal.

Unless you are using the Verizon cloud app, I'd suggest disabling it - it seems to be using a lot of your battery.

I agree that the Facebook app is a pain in the neck. I now use the Facebook mobile web site using the phone's browser when I want to look at Facebook.

In a lot of your screenshots, the mobile signal is not great. Two of the things that will drain the phone are using the display a lot and having a weak mobile signal - the phone has to increase the power to the antenna in order to hold a signal. That said, GSAM thinks that the radio is only using about 8% of your battery. The real culprit is the display...

Unfortunately, the display on this phone draws a lot of power when it is lit. I'd say that the best way to deal with that is to reduce the brightness to as low as you absolutely need. It's too bad that the Moto decided to go with such a hi-res display. At this size 1080p would have been more than good enough. All those extra pixels don't add much but draw a lot of power to light them up. (It's also too bad that Google insists on preventing a black background if the user wants it - that could help a lot with an AMOLED display.)

Sorry I disappeared for a few days--been busy at work!

Great input from jonstrong and doogald. I'd also add that those last battery stats you gave us showed the battery only down to around 68%, which probably didn't give the best overall picture of what's using your battery. If you don't mind doing it again, charge up to 100%, then use it as you normally would until the battery is down to around 20-30%. Then show us the screenshots.

I have figured out a way to have a black background. Sounds simple but it worked for me.
Cover the lens of the Camera and take a picture. Save it and use it as a wall paper

I meant for the settings screen. Almost all material design apps use white backgrounds; good ones let you customize with black backgrounds.

The settings app - too bad it can't be dark.
