I see that the Droid 2 provides the ability to customize notification settings for individual apps, but I don't see a way to set specific sounds for each app.

I want to hear specific sounds for specific apps when they need to alert me for something. Is this possible?

Sure. The settings within the app will allow you to customize the sound notifications used by the app, as long as the app supports it. It is a function of the app, not of the phone. The Gmail app, twitter app, messaging apps - all of these apps allow you to pick a custom ringtone for the app notifications.

So, open the apps where you want sound notifications customized and look in the settings for the app.
