Put your phone in Airplane mode and turn on WiFi and try to make a call.

Duh to me.... Shows you how often I use airplane mode... Had always thought it shuts everything off and not allow WiFi to turn on

I put my phone in airplane mode and and I had to turn wifi back on then I made a call and it worked fine. However texting will not work on WiFi which is disappointing to say the least.

It will work with the Verizon Messages+ app, right? That's one of the Messages+ selling points...

Yes it does work on the Verizon Messages app...I used it quite a lot during my 4 trips to Australia this year when off network.

I just tried what you outlined above sitting here at the house and it worked perfectly. I was able to place a call to my home phone with no problem while in airplane mode. You may want to make sure that you have a good Wi-Fi connection and try again

To be eligible for Wi-Fi Calling, you need to:
    • Have a phone that's HD Voice-enabled and Wi-Fi Calling-capable
    • Have the HD Voice feature on your account and activated
    Troubleshooting:

Why can't I make or receive Wi-Fi calls?

If you're unable to make or receive Wi-Fi calls, it may be due to one of the following reasons:
