Turn notification sound off while listening to music

So when I'm listening to music, or a podcast, and I start getting a barrage of email, which happens from time to time, it interrupts the music or podcast for a half second while it plays the notification sound. That's fine if it happens once every 5-10 minutes, but sometimes it happens 5-10 times a minute. Is there any way to configure the phone to keep playing music via my headphones while it plays a notification simultaneously via the phone speaker?

You have to set your phone to vibrate or silent while listening to music. The quickest way to do that, is via a widget called audiomanager, available in the market.
It would be nice if the phone automatically did this, but it doesn't.

You might also try an app called "locale" with the "headphones plug-in", both of which are in the Market. I haven't tried it, but I've heard great things about it.
