First make sure you have Z4root 1.3.0. For me it took about 1 minute to root, but I have heard it taking a lot longer for others. If it does not take the first time (freezes) do a battery pull and try again. Sometimes it takes several attempts, it should work.

So I pulled the. Battery and tried it again. Worked great. But I'm using z4root.1.1.0, do I need to sbf it and re-do it? And can I run gingerbread with this? I'm new to all of this and all the directions for gingerbread confuse me.

In case no one has answered you on this.

Once you are rooted, you now have the ability to install custom ROMs. As the Gingerbread Leak is obviously not an official ROM from Verizon, this would be considered a custom ROM.

It really isn't super challenging to install, it just seems confusing at first.

Below is a generalized set of instructions on installing a new custom ROM.

[HOW TO] Droid X Bootstrap (backup, ROMs, themes, removing)

If you are still confused, here is a link to a youtube video showing you how to install GB on your DX.

Hope this helps.
