Backcountry GPS App?

My old Garmin barebones gps guides me to alpine lakes way out in the backcountry by giving me a simple graphic w/a straight line to my destination, a superimposed direction arrow, and a distance number. I like this. So I have two questions:

- If I go "off grid" where there are no streets, will Google Maps app revert to a similar mode?

- If not, is there an app that will do this for me?

Thanks!

Trimble Outdoors might be a good one. They need some polish though, gotta tap each tile to get it to save the map for offline viewing. However the Droid rocks at GPS w/out cell service.

Groundspeak is also working on an official Geocaching client too btw. I'm one of their beta testers, I haven't been given the go ahead to post screenshots yet because their UI isn't finalized but the app will be fantastic.
