I just wanted to know what the benefits of rooting are and maybe the cons (if any).

    Pros:
It lets you run some programs that are restricted by the default permissions. Search the marketplace for "root" to see a list of them.
It lets you load custom ROMs.

    Cons:
It voids your warranty (once you're rooted you can mess with the CPU clock and fry/prematurely age your hardware, among other things).
It's much easier to screw up your phone.
It exposes you to more security risks (once an app has root access it can do what it pleases).

Don't root just to root (unless you want to learn the Android guts, in that case don't use the one-click method but learn how to SBF). Figure out what it is you want to accomplish and then we can help figure out if you need to root or not.

You may be out of warranty anyway, if so ROMs can help stave off the boredom. Just make Titanium Backup your first download

Look into CM7 or MIUI, and a few others like Sensei Mod are listed in some threads. Searching for screenshots can help you decide.

Also consider what you're doing with the phone afterwards. I intend to keep mine as a 4.3" tablet once I upgrade, but if you plan to sell I would place a higher value on a never-rooted, pure stock phone. Others are looking for pre-rooted, so check out your favorite sales channel to see if there's a price delta.

Theres a few acronyms around for it. You can google it and pick one for yourself. More important is what it does and how lucky we are to have it. Plus look at the reactions you get from ppl who don't know what u mean when you say you just had to. sbf lol

SBF is the method for getting Motorola phones back to a known software image. For example, you can SBF back to stock Froyo. Essentially you obtain an SBF file and a program called RSD Lite (Windows) or sbf_flash (Linux) or Ubuntu (install that to fix OSX ). Then you can push the SBF image to your phone - I've got some instructions here but there are plenty more in this forum:
