Hello everyone! I use the standard Google camera app on my phone, and sometimes ProShot. I was trying to find a good setting for macro shots, but the standard camera doesn't have any, and on the ProShot I couldn't find any (or maybe I haven't looked deep enough).

I was reading about external smartphone lenses for macro and fish eye, however was wondering, can this be achieved solely using some apps? Or is the phone camera simply unable to focus on objects that close?

Also if any of you have been successful in taking macro shots from your Nexus 6Ps, please let me know how, and also if you could post a couple of images for reference that would be very helpful. Thank you in advance! Cheers

    Well in a way.
From what I understand, macro shots are extreme close ups of a particular subject, so much so that things around and behind the subject go out of focus.

Nexus 6P has digital zoom. The problem is I am unable to focus on anything if it is less than 6-7 inches away. And digital zoom is not lossless either. I do not want to lose resolution for my shots. Hence the question

That's as close as you can get. It's a physical limitation of the lens.

So what do you suggest I do?
Should I use clip-on lenses? Are there any good ones?

I've had the same question. Taking product shots for eBay listings doesn’t work well for this phone. Not sure if this is true of other phones.

Try this.... It works for me. Back up a bit, and use the zoom to compensate. With nice lighting it's a great way to get a macro shot without a lens that can do it optically (physically, that is). Try that and post your results!

The minimal focal distance is about 3 inches. Only thing you can do is stay at least 3 inches from your subject and crop the image in post. It's a physical limit of the lens and nothing to do with software. It's how lenses work.

You are better off up sampling i photoshop later than optical zooming on the phone. You'll get a cleaner image with better detail. Especially if you have Photoshop which will do a much better job of up sampling than the phone software.

    Definitely! Digital zoom degrades quality.

Some phones handle macro better than others, but the 6P isn't one of them. It's OK, but not the best.

I would recommend a macro lens or even a magnifying glass! I used the latter to get around the same issue with my Lumia 1020 (which had a focusing distance of 15cm?!!?!) and the results are pretty good actually. Plus, I still got the photo in full resolution (but I cropped to 32MP to cut out the optical distortion).

Here are some samples using the magnifying glass and 1020!

Correct - but I've used this method in a pinch, and it has worked out to focus on details that I couldn't get otherwise.

Macro clip on lenses would do the trick. Quality will be better then zooming in.
