I disabled android system webview on my 6P while it was running 6.0.1. I then updated to the Android N beta. I now cannot re-enable it. I'm not sure that I was able to re-enable it before. Is it important? I haven't had problems without it. I want to re-enable it though.

    Welcome to Android Central!

You can try clearing the data from the app to see if that fixes it. I am not 100% sure of what it does, I will pose it to one of the Nexus experts.

Well... it could very well be that WebView isn't supported in N yet.

As for its usage... it helps apps open web pages without launching Chrome directly. Rather it opens a browser session 'in-app'. You don't really NEED it in the sense that you will lose some important functionality.

What is stopping you from re-enabling it? Is there an error or just no option to enable?

maybe webview is being depricated in Android N. Chrome Custom tab could replace webview and could do more than webview.

google dont need to maintain 2 version anymore

You should not need to enable Android System WebView except in rare circumstances where Chrome is giving you a problem. As of OS 7.0 Nougat, Chrome has replace the WebView as the in-app webpage renderer for Android apps which use this feature.

If you really need to re-enable it, you should go to the Chrome app in app settings, disable it, then go to the Google Play app store and update / re-install / enable WebView. They won't work together.

Here's what you have to do. In order to update or use webview, you must first STOP the Chrome app from running. You can then run or update the Webview utility. I initially could not login to my Wells Fargo Mobile app, but once I stopped Chrome I was able to do what I needed to do.

If you have chrome installed, the webview wont get enabled.
There are few apps which use webview, if they are not working that means the chrome is not updated properly.
Simply update the chrome and you wont need webview to be enabled.
If you are desperate to use webview, you will need to uninstall/disable the chrome then the web view can be enabled. they both wont work simultaneously.

I was wondering the same and firgured it out. Just disable the chrome app and you can update and enable android system webview. It doesnt really make a difference but that's how you enable it.

Android System Webview is built into Chrome in Android 7, but you can enable any Webview implementation, including the old standalone app, by enabling developer options and choosing Webview Implementation.

So, there shouldn't be any need to uninstall or disable Chrome.

To enable developer options, go to settings > about phone, and tap on build number about seven (or more) times.

Welcome to the forums. What phone and version of android are you using? After Nougat the Android System Webview is included in the Chrome app.

Same here. The solution i found lies in the chrome. Uninstall any updates and then disable it and then go the app settings of disabled where you will find the system web view app enabled. Thanks.
