GBoard keeps stopping autocapitalizing "i"

[AC Question]

I have GBoard on OP 3T. It wont autocapitalize the pronoun "i". I have managed to fix this by clearing the app data for GBoard from the running apps list. Nothing else worked, I tried clearing user dictionaries, adjusting autocorrect/autocapitalization settings etc. Only clearing data worked.

Now here's the sticky bit: Within about an hour it _goes right back to not working!_

The only thing I can think of is that not allowing it to send "some" data to Google to help their systems affects this functionality somehow? (I usually turn of all data sharing functionality for things like this, why the flip does a keyboard need to phone home outside of updates and searches?)

Welcome to Android Central! If you type "i" and you see the letter "i" in the word suggestions, what happens if you long-press it? Do you get an option to delete it from the suggestions?

I've seen a rare occurrence of that. I don't know what drives it either.
