I think about getting one but after I saw and read a lot of review it made me think about how bad the camera is.

Is the latest software improve the camera quality?

    Thanks.

Hi! OP has released software updates that improves the camera. The camera isn't bad - it's decent - it's just not on par with the likes of the Pixel 2 line or the S8. It's still a worthwhile purchase, IMO. The reviews I've seen praise the camera - they don't say it's the best by any means, but they say it's pretty good and it gets the job done.

It's not great in low light but other than that, it is fine.

In my opinion the camera is very nice. The 5 and especially the 5t are well worth the price.

I would also add that one's perception of camera performance is subjective. The camera specifications themselves are not, of course, but user and reviewer feedback is. This is mainly why I take reviewers' camera, screen/display, and battery statements with a grain of salt. Individual user cases will certainly vary.

For example, one reviewer may say the camera on Phone A is sub-par; whereas I myself may use the same phone under the same conditions and claim that the photo is great. Or, a power user may say his battery life is horrible; whereas another user who is into reading articles and light gaming may say otherwise. The specs are identical, yet users will interpret their usefulness and efficacy differently based on their usage patterns and individual opinions.

Specs don't lie, but individual user experience will certainly vary. If you would like to try out the OnePlus 5T - great! Try out the camera and see how you, yourself feel about it. I've heard their return policy is excellent, so if you find that you are dissatisfied, you will not be stuck!

Hardware wise the camera is great. It's their post processing that sucks. Install the gcam mod and you'll see a world of a difference in quality. I'd say on par with my s8.

Which gcam mod? When I go to xda, it seems there are more than one. But then, I could be missing something since I am not the sharpest knife in then drawer.

I'm coming from the pixel 2 and so far I'm happy with the camera and being able to shoot 18.9 aspect is pretty cool too.
I should say I'm a average point and shoot photographer

For my first venture into Android, I chose this phone because all the specs met my needs. I was a little concerned about what I read about the camera since I love having beautiful photos, but I took my chances. I recently took a low light photo of my cat sitting on the bed in a dark room at night. I turned on the closet light and had my back to the closet. The photo turned out great! Is it bright and light in the background? No, and it shouldn't be, based on the situation. I looked at it on my large computer screen and it's flawless. I zoom in tighter and tighter and it's still sharp and clear. I'm very impressed. Will all my low light photos look this good? Probably not. But it's not all "doom and gloom" like I was led to believe. I'm very happy with this phone.

I am with you on the camera. It is a good camera. It may not equal the best available, but I didn't pay that price. Though people complain about the camera and that the software "sucks", it really is a nice camera.

Yes, but so far there have been issues with how it performs on the 5T such as loss on the tap to focus feature. But I am confident someone will figure how to get it working right soon. They have it perfected on the 3T.

This is the version I use. Turn off motion photos and set it up as in the photo. Tap to focus doesn't work on any mod but it does auto focus fast. The picture quality is great.

With this Pixel 2 software do you still have the option to use the stock camera app ? Would there be two choices in the app drawer ?
    Thanks for your help.

Yes both options are there and I use both. I'll use stock for manual. I don't find the stock all that bad to be honest but there is a difference in quality with the gcam mod. I believe the only thing that breaks the stock camera is the magisk module fix.
