Recovering data on Oneplus 5 after root possible?

Hi there.
I have lost files of my Oneplus 5 with Android 8.

Does it make sense to root my phone now and then run a recovery tool? Or will there be no chance of finding anything as the phone will be wiped during the root process.

Since it's a matter of unlocking the bootloader, everything will get wiped, so you won't be able to recover anything. (If you're ever going to root a phone, as soon as you get it is the time.)

Android is encrypted by default now, even if you don't set your own PIN/password. So I doubt you'll be able to recover any data after a factory reset.

In fact, this is the exact reason encryption is now default. They did a study years ago on factory reset, but un-encrypted phones that people had turned in, and discovered an alarming amount of recoverable data. This was seen as a big security/privacy concern, so now it encrypts on the very first boot of the device.
