What's the difference between alpha and beta?

Alpha is an earlier stage than beta so its less stable

Alpha means incomplete but semi working. Beta means its close to final but usually still buggy.

Alpha = still getting things working
Beta = testing those things to try and squash major bugs
RC or release candidate = final phase of bug testing before release.

Usually only developers mess with Alpha.
Beta usually encompasses a little of everyone.
RC is when you want as many testing as you can.
