Root Only?

I have rooted an Optimus V before and I had to reinstall of my apps, settings, etc. Is there a way to root the Optimus V that leaves everything intact, including the market app updates?

What is the process for flashing using ROMTools? I have it downloaded but have no idea which choices to pick to flash it to the phone.
I've tried to flash a custom recovery using ROMTools and it never seems to want to work.
I definitely have root access.
