You have to open Framework-res.apk with Winrar/zip and navigate to res>xml>eri.xmlI've tried it on ics via build prop with no success, they only thing I've managed to repeat from iho is changing LCD density. But haven't tried via computer

Wildfire isn't LDPI, its MDPI.
I used winrar to change the eri.xml
You need to edit just like in Jerry's guide using HxD hex editor.

I updated the OP with info for those on Froyo based ROMs, you can edit the build.prop file located in your system folder and get the same results much easier:
ro.cdma.home.operator.alpha=Virgin Mobile
