Can I help build up gyms I'm not a member of? I mean do I have to have a Pokémon on the gym roster to fight my own team color?

Opposing gyms, do I lose anything other than a few revive potions and HP spray to fight them? Do I get stronger Pokémon even if I lose? I mean is there any serious harm to fight an overpowering opponent? I am only level 6 and most nearby gyms are not the teams I want to join.

You can build prestige for any gym of your color. You have to win battles to build prestige. Your pokemon can be healed with potions (won't need revives).

You can battle any opposing gym but you only advance for battles you win. Your pokemon can be revived with the yellow crystals and healed with potions.
