While this thread is mainly directed at US citizens concerning the desecration by flame of our flag by our citizens in some type of protest. All others are welcome to participate however your comments should be related to how you feel about citizens of your country burning that flag.

I watched an old YouTube video of Rick Monday saving a US flag from being burned in the field during a 1976 Baseball game. I can also remember watching this game on TV and discussing it in our civics class in school.

Burning the US flag is NOT a form of protest. If you want to protest something make up a clever sign, staple it to a stick and carry it around for others to see. This was wrong when I was a kid and it's wrong now.

(I am aware that sometimes citizens of other countries burn our flag as well to protest the actions of our government, or just the US in general this is also wrong. If they can ask for our help then they burn our flag they should not get any financial aid.)

Burning the flag is the appropriate way to destroy it when something like touching the ground occurs. I'm kind of torn on this one, because the flag is just a symbol and therefor falls into the category of "words" to me and the protest action is then a form of free speech. I would prefer they find a more elegant and non-offensive way to voice their arguments, but I don't really get to make that choice for them.

It's also unclear if there should be a distinction between protesting the government or the country. The country is The People (in my view) and the government is a function of that, subservient to The People, at least in theory. Which does the flag represent?

I agree it's inappropriate for people in other countries to seek financial aid from the US and then protest against the US... but the actions of some citizens also do not represent the whole country, any more than the actions of the Westboro Baptist Church represents all American's, all Christians, all cultists, etc.

This I agree with, last year I was returning from a Patriot Guard funeral escort for a WW II veteran that had been on Iwo Jima, while turning down a side street to get gas With a full size 3X5 US, and POW flag flying on the back of the bike I was rear ended. I had to have the US flag burned, out of respect I burned the POW flag myself.

In the US the ONLY way to have a flag properly disposed with is by turning it over to your local American Legion post. There is a special ceremony that goes along with destroying a desecrated US Flag.

This should be the ONLY time our flag is burned.

Burning the flag is a disgrace. If it makes you feel any better, I had these people on a island in the middle of the river next to my school for a few weeks in a "Tent Embassy" Burning flags, claiming they want rights, ditching rocks at passing boats and cars etc. FYI Our gov provides Indigenous community's with millions and so do the mining company's who are on their former land with their rock drawings. I have nothing against the indigenous community (I have some family who are), however I have an issue with burning the flag trying to prove a point and disrupting the general public.

I think burning currency is similar to the flag, shouldn't occur. I know this topic is for the US basically, but I think globally people should respect their own flag and their own government. There are curropt goverments at times but their are otherways to prove a point

Money and flag 2 different things.
Burn the flag you should get smacked around like the coward you are.
Burn money, your a dollar broker than you started with.
One exemption is native americans. For what this country did to them they have a natural right to show thier feelings.

It's ironic that currently burning the Flag is legal (protected as Free Speech) and burning currency is illegal.

Not at all. The treasury will print more without batting an eye. Thousands of dollars are destroyed every day as currency gets taken out of service.

Coupled with only 1-3% of dollars "in circulation" actually ever being printed. 97% of all money that exists is 100% imaginary/digital.

People who burn flags and chant anti slogans are doing it to provoke an emotional response.

I'll never forget during the original Iranian Hostage Crisis, we saw Iranians burning the U.S. flag everyday. Then a bunch of people in the U.S, started burning the Iranian flag, which was on the news. The bottom line to me was, the people in the U.S. burning the Iranian flag looked just as stupid as the people in Iran burning the U.S. flag.

I took a class in girlscouts on the proper way to conduct a flag burning ceremony. When done in respect, it is an honor. When done in hatred, it is a disgusting and crude way to express your emotions. These people have no other proper way to express their opinion without resorting to ugly and trashy manner.

Ironic that Jennifer's last sentence might also apply to some number of posts on these forums.
