If I'm not mistaken, there are states where the electoral college votes are split based on how the popular vote goes in the state. So even if counting absentee ballots can't change the popular vote winner, it could affect how the electoral college votes go and still have an effect on the presidency. But if I am mistaken and have my facts mixed up, feel free to ignore this. It's been a while since I've heard how those states work.
You could be correct, I am not certain.

We count very few votes now. (Prior to the end of the race). Almost all of the maps we see on the news are based on districts self reporting based on exit polls. The concession typically happens while Hawaii is still open and many districts do their official count and certification 2-3 weeks later (also prior to absentee ballots), though most are just a few days later.

Such a waste of time and paperwork. Not worth the hassle!

Now imagine if Cain ran again and won the next election. You know there's going to be gloating that Republicans had the first truly black President.
It wasn't in the cards for the Republicans, but they can certainly try again in 2016. History would be made again. Better yet, they could go for a triple threat by selecting someone from the Log Cabin Republicans. For example, they could field a lesbian Latina woman as a presidential candidate. Even the Democrats never thought of that.
