Why can't I get back my contacts?

My contacts suddenly disappeared from my Samsung Nexus phone and I was left with numbers only! I tried already to change the display of contacts (Contacts/Menu/Display SIM-Phone-Gmail contacts) but it didn't work. I tried to restore the contacts from my Gmail account, however now I seem to have lost the connection between the phone the the server! I cannot access the gmail account via the phone, and if I try to download the app again it gives that it is already there, even though every time I try to access it by phone it just crashes; somehow the phone does not recognize the presence of the gmail account and does not connect to it anymore...
Any ideas on how to restore the contacts and connection to gmail server? Help!!!

Welcome to Android Central! Go to Settings>Accounts-Google>[your Google account], and see if everything is checked the way you want it. If so, and you're still having issues, then try removing your Google account, then add it back again.
