Samsung mini usb to HDMI adaptor requiring power source?

I recently bought a mini usb to HDMI adaptor (model number ET-H10FAU) from eBay and it seems to only work on my note 10.1 2014 edition when I'm using a power source (A mini usb cable to a plugged in ac adaptor.) Is this normal or is there something wrong with the adaptor? I was hoping that I could use the adaptor without such a power source.

Yup, all MHL cables require an external power source to work their voodoo magic It's a drag, but if you think about it, it saves your phone from running out of juice mid-transmission.
