Now that we have ufs 3.0
Is using a micro sd going to slow our phones down and deplete our battery, compared to ufs 3.0 by itself ? Ufs 3.0 is 5 times faster in sequential reading and 20 x faster in random reading and it's also 45% more battery efficient
If I watch a movie from my SD card , is it going to deplete my battery faster than watching it from my ufs 3.0 storage?

Re: Should we use mirco SD cards on note 10+ or not?
I would say yes but as to how fast it will deplete your battery will vary on many factors.
-
Re: Should we use mirco SD cards on note 10+ or not?
I personally wouldn't worry about it. I doubt you'll see any appreciable difference in performance if all you're doing is watching movies and such. I also just prefer keeping personal files like that on an SD card. That way if/when it's time to change phones, it's a simple card swap vs waiting for those files to copy via USB transfer or downloading a cloud backup.
-
Re: Should we use mirco SD cards on note 10+ or not?
i haven't used a micro sd card in years. i prefer the cloud storage for a lot of stuff.

Well I've seen a couple of YouTubers say that the sd card will slow the heck out of phone (Jaime Rivera pocketnow)
And that started to worry me
I pre-ordered the aura blue 256gb thinking I'm gonna use my 512 sd card on it , now not sure
-
Re: Should we use mirco SD cards on note 10+ or not?
It's individual needs but personally never needed SD cards for years so I'm not going to use it. But it doesn't hurt if it's the, you never know when it'll be useful.
-
Re: Should we use mirco SD cards on note 10+ or not?
I mean if you're only using to watch already downloaded movies or listen to music I wouldn't be too worried.

Well , I use my phone for everything , the movie thing was just and example , I meant in general, will a sd card slow my note 10+ down , will it consume more battery than ufs 3.0 by itself?

Even if it does use more power, consider how often you'll be accessing the card. Chances are, it won't be often, unlike apps, which access internal storage almost constantly.
-
Re: Should we use mirco SD cards on note 10+ or not?
The screen being on while watching a movie will suck down battery life more than the micro sd card will. This will be ok.
I only put media on my sd card in my Note9. Important documents and apps are on the internal memory.

Well , every time i take a picture or look at one , every time I read a book or watch a TV show , movie, Netflix , I live in NYC take the subway every day
(No signal so most of my content I download so I can use in the subway ) my SD card is full of movies , tv shows , pictures, books, so my phone is constantly reading from my SD card

SD cards are rated in write cycles. You can read it until a 1TB card is too small to be useful.
But apps have to constantly save their current state, so it the app is a game with constantly changing scenery, the card isn't going to last long. (The game will spend about half its time running the game and half writing the "new state" - maybe one blade of grass creeping in from a corner. That's virtually a constant write as far as the card is concerned, and destroys it.)
But WORM - write once read many - is fine. I have cards from the early 90s that I've been reading from for almost 30 years with no problem. (WMRO - write many read often - is what kills them.)
The original question was SD vs. UFS. @dario12v, there are no microSD-form-factor UFS cards yet - that's the internal storage in the phone. You'll still be buying SD for a while (if not forever - I have no idea whether SanDisk or WD has any plans to make UFS cards). But an SD card is useful for more than just storing all your pictures, videos, etc. There are ways (especially with Samsung) of booting a "dead" phone using an SD card. And it's faster, in many cases, to copy a file to an SD card, then to the target (depends on which way you're copying, of course) than it is to use USB file transfer.

What cloud storage do you use for your phone?? I think this time around I won't use an SD card.
-
Re: Should we use mirco SD cards on note 10+ or not?
@YaniCruz, the phone comes with a Drive account (15GB) and a Samsung cloud account. Between them you should have enough space. You can also use Dropbox (2GB), Mega (50GB, I think), Box (10GB) and a few others. You should be able to find 50GB for free with a few minutes of looking. Or just look at https://www.whizlabs.com/blog/best-free-cloud-storage/ - I see about 102GB of free storage.
-
Re: Should we use mirco SD cards on note 10+ or not?
I am using my SD card. I have so many photos that I've kept from previous phones that it would take forever to transfer them between devices. Just moving the SD card from one device to the other is so much easier.

Re: Should we use mirco SD cards on note 10+ or not?
Be mindful that the wattage in the screenshot is the maximum consumption. If it ran at max power the entire time, a 4100 Watt battery would deplete in something like 7 hours assuming nothing else is running (processor, screen, etc.). The reality is it runs at much lower power. At idle, per is messed in a few hundred micro-amps. If you think about how much per your screen and processor are using already, the actual per consumed by the storage had to be quite small. So even if the SD card used twice the power, the contribution to overall per consumption would still be very small. Unless you're on the ragged edge of making it through the day, it's just not worth worrying about.
As for speed, surely, it can make a difference. But only when your device actually needs to read or write at high speeds. If you can watch a movie fine now, having faster read write speeds aren't going to make a difference.

Good points all , it's good to have knowledgeable people like you in here SD has it's advantages
But I'm still undecided
Hope we'll soon have some test on this ,
ufs 3.0 vs ufs 3.0 +sd on the note 10+

Do you have the photos backed up somewhere? If not, you're going to lose them when the card fails or when your phone gets lost or stolen.
And to be more precise about "forever": if you have 200 GB of media, then at 10 MB/s it'd take less than 6 hours to transfer, so you could do it overnight.
-

Originally Posted by

This is not entirely accurate. If you choose the free unlimited option it will save them at "High Quality" and not "Original Quality".
High quality:
Unlimited free storage
Photos are compressed to save space. If a photo is larger than 16 MP, it will be resized to 16 MP.
Videos higher than 1080p will be resized to high-definition 1080p. A video with 1080p or less will look close to the original.
Original quality:
Limited free storage (15GB)
All photos and videos are stored in the same resolution that you took them.
Recommended for photos that have more than 16MP and videos with more than 1080p.

I have a 512GB card. Came from a 400Gb and 256GB. I try to keep them changed out every yr or so. I have them backed up but I have so many photos it would be hard to know which ones I had.

Would be interesting to know if the card reader is improved at all vs older models.
There are faster SD cards out there that most phones cannot take advantage of.

Are there faster than this out there ? And how expensive are they? Lol

That's a good card. There may be some faster, but it'd be overkill in a phone.

For me personally the inbuilt storage is more than enough.
I bought the 512Gb option on my Note 9 and I haven't used anywhere near that. I also got that model for the more Ram option but as now both Note 10+ models have the same Ram that's makes my choice much easier.
I've had good quality Sd Cards fail before which is a headache so no more Sd cards for me. :)

That is a good as any current phone can use I think. There are A2 cards out there but unless things have changed the readers in all phones that I know of cannot use the extra speed so totally pointless.

Re: Should we use mirco SD cards on note 10+ or not?
There are certainly ppl that fall into both use/need and never used/no idea. Personally, storage expansion is critical to me. Just as ppl have said on board memory is all they need, but if that device is broken your pix, downloads, etc are all lost. Some will go for cloud upload of pix which is good, but you have to pay for that in MOST cases. I also store music on my phone. 20-30GB of it. The whole purpose of having local music is to avoid excessive data usage, or when data isn't even available. The lack of microSD card combined with the gross look and boring/no features have stopped and will continue to stop me from even considering a Pixel. Especially at flagship prices. As for using on the Note, clearly I would.

Re: Should we use mirco SD cards on note 10+ or not?
yes..it's a must for me. I have a huge amount of music and I am using a 400gb micro sd card for my music. I can't live without a phone with a micro sd card slot.
-
Re: Should we use mirco SD cards on note 10+ or not?
I use a 128 GB MicroSD in my Galaxy S8 - mostly for offline storage of music and podcasts, and for photos. I sync the photos via OneDrive and Google Drive, but I like having the freedom of not worrying about filling up my main phone storage.
-
Re: Should we use mirco SD cards on note 10+ or not?
It's funny because I was going to start a thread and ask what kind of micro sd card I should get for my note 10+. I ordered the 512GB version but I tend to take tons of video and almost maxed my current note 9 and 256gb micro sd card in this phone. So from this thread would it entirely not be a good idea?

I am on the fence about this as when my phone broke my SD card became corrupted. I thought I lost the 9000+ photos and 400+ CD albums I had on it. Thank God everything was already backed up with Google. I started to cry in the phone store when the rep brought all my "stuff" back for me!!

You should always keep backups (preferably multiple), whether you use the SD card or not. If you use the card or not is up to you, but don't rely on it or your phone as your only storage option, as you've seen first-hand.

Most music does not take you a lot of space unless you are storing high resolution files which I do. As to streaming, unlimited data plans solve the using up data issue.

Re: Should we use mirco SD cards on note 10+ or not?
It's really up to you and what your needs are. My n9 is 128 gb , but I got a 256 gb card free with another phone so I've been using it, but since my n 10 will be 256 gb I probably won't need to use it this go round. With all my music and pics I'm barely using 37 gb of my card.

Re: Should we use mirco SD cards on note 10+ or not?
I still use SD cards and Cloud storage. I find it terribly convenient to store my photos and documents on the SD card and it also allows me to move many of my apps to the SD card, freeing up more internal memory. I tend to have a wee bit more apps installed on my phone than the average user. 😁

Do Not move your apps to memory card on note 10
Internal memory on note 10 is ufs 3.0 Wich is 5 times faster than your external storage
You'll slow down your phone , plus with 256 gb at least + sd card , there's no need to transfer the apps even if you have 500 apps on your phone
Here's a memory comparison

Re: Should we use mirco SD cards on note 10+ or not?
I use them when I travel. I download several movies into them and then when I'm in a area where there is little or no cloud/internet access, I have my movies and can fully utilize my internal storage on my trip. Plus, I have the SD cards in a wallet separated by genre and I can switch out and see whatever I want, when and where ever I want. They do indeed serve a purpose.

https://fossbytes.com/ufs-3-0-featur...rison-microsd/ Not only this, but apps constantly write to their storage locations, which will cause an SD card to corrupt prematurely. It's so risky that even in the photography world, they recommend reformatting the card between sessions instead of deleting the photos. The reformat only rewrites the registration files, leaving the actual photo data alone, and thus saving write cycles.

That's what I thought to until I lost 5,600+ pictures during a phone swap. I'll never use an SD card again. With 256gb of base storage I'll have 4 times the storage I have ever used.

UFS cards are only compatible with devices supporting UFS cards. I don't think the N10+ supports it. I could be wrong though.

SD cards only slow down your phone if you put apps on it. I have videos, photos, documents on my sd card on my Note 9, never have any slow downs or lag at all. I get all the read/write tech speak but just from experience it doesn't slow it down, try it for yourself and see.

The note 9 doesn't have the note 10's ufs 3.0 Wich is 5 times faster than your note 9 both internal and external memory

I didn't realize until my second Galaxy S10+ that the reason I was getting crashes and extreme freeze ups while trying to record video was because of my SD card being set as the save location. It was a free 200gb card I got with like the LG V10 years ago..so it's probably not the fastest thing around.. but still once I switched the storage location everything worked great. As far as playing back video though, even with that card I never had any issue with stuttering or unusual battery use.
That said, I don't plan on using an SD card with my Note 10+ because I have a 256gb OnePlus 7 pro right now and even with a bunch of movies and music playlists downloaded and all my apps (plus a ton I rarely use) I still have about 150gb of storage left.

I can't wait to get this phone in my hands in a couple of days and run some test on this kind of stuff , specially ufs 3.0 vs SD card speed , there's some YouTubers working on this already, R.i.c.k.y said on his live show today he's working on a video called :
"why you should never put a micro sd card on your note 10+"
According to his test the ufs 3.0 storage was 9 times faster than the sd card , video will be out in a couple of days , should be interesting , so far I'm leaning on not putting my 512gb on my new phone , since my storage needs never go beyond 150 gb
Specially these days with the compression how it is right now
A movie used to take up 20 gb at 1080p now days most movies take about 1gb at 1080p
Same goes for books , music, pics , everything takes less space these days

Re: Should we use mirco SD cards on note 10+ or not?
Use my 256sd card purely for photo backup. That's it.
They are important to ME, so on phone, sd card and 2 payed cloud back ups.
Must admit, yet again, google just works across the family for one of these back ups.

Re: Should we use mirco SD cards on note 10+ or not?
I'm kind of thinking about going this route when I get the phone this week. Logistically, how do you do this?
Before I go pick up my phone, I'm thinking about just dumping everything from my SD card on my current phone onto my computer, wiping the card, and then using the card as photo backup only. Would then transfer everything from that computer folder to the internal storage of my new phone.
But I don't know if there's a better way. Kind of want to do a clean install with this phone, not use Smart Switch or anything.

Re: Should we use mirco SD cards on note 10+ or not?
I use to think I needed a MicroSD card in all my phones. But after having so many fail and how sloooooooow it is to transfer stuff off/on. I just get the biggest storage available. Before phones use to be 16/32GB. But now with 256GB+, I really dont see a need for it.

I'm on the same boat , usually have a 512 gb SD card in my phones , but after looking at my s10+, ivs only used 150 gb, so no need for the card really, no card for me unless i run out of space
Wich I don't see happening
Don't wanna slow my phone down

Re: Should we use mirco SD cards on note 10+ or not?
Since apparently I'm waiting a week to pick up my phone, I guess I have time to work on this:
What's the best way to get everything I want from my current SD card into the internal memory of my new phone? I've had the same SD card for a few years, and have only ever used it for my pictures, and maybe stuff like ringtones or music, I think. Pictures are all backed up on Google photos.
I think I JUST want to transfer pictures over. Maybe some music for offline listening. I want to set up the new phone from scratch, pretty much.
I already copied my entire SD card onto my computer, but there's like 100 folders and I haven't looked at them yet.

I thought my Note 8 SD card would not work in Note 10+ without some form of conversion. I was wrong card works fine all photos, music is recognized.

Hmmm... 512gb is enough for me...

Re: Should we use mirco SD cards on note 10+ or not?
I would be comfortable using one if I needed it, but 512gb will be more than enough for me. I only needed a 256gb, but since they were sold out, I bumped up to 512. I don't see a situation where I will need more than that.

Re: Should we use mirco SD cards on note 10+ or not?
I have a 512GB micro sd in my 512GB Note 10+. Yeah, it's overkill, but I store my media, photos, etc. on the SD card. Photos are auto backed up on Google Photos in original resolution and there is nothing on the card that I don't have a backup for. I rather be able to pull the card out with that data easily and not worry about it all if I need to do a factory reset, or whatever.

Re: Should we use mirco SD cards on note 10+ or not?
I have 400gb card in my Note 10+ but am nowhere near filling it, mainly FLAC files and my secondary music sub (Spotify goes on the main storage) I have had the card a while so if I thought that the Note could take advantage of the faster A2 cards I would think about changing it for a smaller faster one.
No conclusive evidence yet as to whether the card reader is any faster than the Note 9 or S10. I am assuming it is not.

Using my Samsung 512GB Evo+ card in my 512GB Note 10+ and everything seems smooth and fluid.

are there limits on what google drive will upload? will it upload raw files, pretty much any file I throw at it?
besides an sd card, I regularly backup my phone to dropbox. I have the 2Tb account and just sync everything so if my phone goes down I have my backups. but I'd like to get away from dropbox now that they were bought out. they changed a lot that I don't care for.

Re: Should we use mirco SD cards on note 10+ or not?
Yeah I upload raw files regularly with no issues. I personally haven't ran into any file type limitations.
