So I downloaded the Google Messages app, but I see nothing in settings for Chat. I have a Note 10+ on Verizon. Am I missing something? Thanks.

You may need to install Google Carrier Services App

My wife's Note 8 has chat via Google Messages.

The Verizon Messages+ app has RCS built into, including chat. I don't use that specific function, but their app on general is nice.

Let us know if you get it working after checking Google Carrier Services as others have suggested. I'm on Verizon and it's working for me with Google Messages.

I actually did that. I assumed I would have it by now anyway if I had not done that some weeks ago, but who knows. RCS originally popped up all by itself, but then disappeared a short while later. Then I used Activity Launcher and I have had it ever since. I don't think people are suposed to have to resort to that any more. This RSC business seems to be a bit of a mess.

If using nova launcher there is no need for activity launcher, it's in the play store though.

Very strange... I just realized I had some other version of messages. Just installed the one from the Play Store and everything is fixed!

That was me. When I first installed Verizon Messages on my new phone, it was listed as that in the Play store. During the setup, it had a notice about RCS and chat features that you could opt in. Doing that changed it to Messages+.

Compared to Messages+, Google Messages doesn't offer much. Messages+ has Car Mode and Scheduled messages, and Google has... umm... yeah give me a minute... it can send texts. Oh and it sends photos and videos through Google Photos in a way that they can seemingly be viewed in the app. That's kind of RCS-esque.

If you want to try RCS on your Verizon phone, I did this... https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...VUb5X4XvoYydxM

To be honest. I thought switching to Android Messages was a significant downgrade. Verizon Message+ allows you to customize a LOT of things; including swipe actions. Maybe now that Google is implementing RCS across the board, it should start incorporating Google Voice features.

But remember, RCS is still carrier-centric. You can't do RCS with the Verizon app to someone on TMO, for example. Not yet. (I lost a lot of business when MMS was in that situation, back around 2004.)

Yes, we know. The US carriers are working together to fix that problem. I don't think they want a repeat of the MMS debacle. It hurt them more than people realize.

Yes, it is RCS capable, but it relies on the carriers' RCS systems. The US carriers are rolling out RCS by the end of 2020.
