Not sure where to post this, but I'm kinda confused with Google messages. So when ever you're on wifi, that's the only time that advanced messages will be on? I find that If I'm out and on 4g it defaults back to sms. Which it kind of defeats the purpose of having RCS. I thought it would work on both wifi and data. Also am I the only one that has a problem with messages not being delivered? It takes a while for the notification to go from sent to delivered. Also receiving messages. My husband was getting messages from a group chat while I wasn't getting anything, we were out and there was no wifi, I was on 4g but my wifi toggle was on. As soon I switched wifi off 30 messages started coming in. Anyone?

Hi there! Let's see if we can help.
    1) Advanced messaging (RCS) is not only active while on WiFi. This only means that, unlike traditional SMS/MMS, if active, RCS will allow you to also text WHILE on WiFi, whether or not you have a valid mobile data connection. The notification depends also on the receiving end (i.e. if they don't have their phones on or out of range, etc.). As for the messages not arriving, check that you have mobile data use in the background allowed for Google Messages, as well as making sure that if you use a VPN, Google's servers are not blocked (or the other way around... I've found that while on VPN, Google is actually iffy). Again, MMS NEEDS mobile data (group texts are considered MMS, even if they contain only text), unless Chat Features are active on Google Messages OR your carrier supports WiFi Calling. Also remember that even if you have RCS active, you're still sending stuff over SMS/MMS unless the receiving party also supports the universal RCS profile (for instance, T-Mobile's own RCS implementation is not the same and still limits media size unless they use Google Messages instead of the stock messaging app).

I would suggest turning Chat features on/off on your end to see if that resets the connection and making sure that the CONNECTED status is active when you're on WiFi or mobile (to see if, for any reason, Google's servers aren't reachable from your specific connection).

Thanks for your help. For some reason I thought RCS would work without WiFi. My other problem with not receiving messages I still have no clue..data can run in the background for Google messages, so I'm not sure why I sometimes I don't receive, or it takes to long to deliver my messages.

RCS DOES work without WiFi, but only if your connection to Google's servers (remember that this is not a carrier-wide rollout, it's still going through Google, which is why you need to use Google Messages as your messaging app) is active. If no connection can be made, RCS (or 'Chat Features') are not active. This, however, works both in mobile data and WiFi (and as stated before, as long as the other party also has RCS active in the conversation).

I'd recommend clearing the app's cache/data and just let it reset itself up. Also, try switching to a 3rd party texting app (even though RCS might not be available). Do you still have issues with delayed messages? If so, this might be an issue with your carrier/line, not with Google Messages or RCS.

Not to sound stupid even though I am on most these issues, but what is RCS and how do I turn it on? I'm assuming it lets you text on wifi when you say...in airplane mode, which is great if it does. Thank you.
You use Google message? RCS (Rich Communication Services) shows read receipts ,typing indicator of someone sending you a message as long as they have the same .better picture quality and video messages.

Thank you, I was deleting my question when you were answering it. I found out by Googling it so have it going now, although still saying Setting up. Thank you. I will love this because I cruise a lot. Must not be available in my area because it won't setup.

Just remember, RCS isn't awesome on its own. If the other end (either receiving or sending you messages) doesn't have RCS enabled (and it needs to be the universal profile if you're using Google Messages), RCS will do nothing. And nope, iMessage is NOT RCS-compatible, so expect your iFriends to still make fun of the crappy pictures they receive from Androids thanks to an outdated MMS limit and automatic media re-sizing/compression.
