It can in fact play wma. Last night I transferred itunes purchased music m4a files to my note 2. Windows 7 asks you to covert the file to wma during the transfer for better compatibility. I chose yes and they converted to wma. I played the songs during my drive to work today with 0 problems.
Yes, I have had issues with my Galaxy S3 as well. Plays wma, but she some times the files just didn't even show up.
Maybe DRM or maybe vBR is an issue.
Just guessing.

I looked closer at my music files and it did play WMA files. When I went tot ransfer them to the phone, it asked me to convert the WMA's, which I thought it was converting to mp3. Guess it needed to convert them into maybe a non-vbr type file?
This thread is so amazing. I had been digging all over the net to find out what the story is with WMA files and newer Android phones when sure enough, searching for the Note 2 and WMA, I came here. Amazing right under my nose. Good to know it can play the files.
