How can I fix a sim card problem?

Hi there Ive just bought a samsung galaxy note 2 when the guy I bought it from was here showing us that it work but once he had left and I put my sim card in it keeps saying insert sim I thought the sim port may have been damaged had it changed but still says the samecan anyone help please

Is the sim card activated? I'd start there and see if it is. Otherwise, check the apn settings.
