I preordered a Note 20 ultra unlocked from Samsung directly can you please advise on how to activate it this is the first time I purchased an unlocked phone. I currently have a Samsung S9 plus on Sprint that has been unlocked. I want to initially stay with Sprint so can I just take the sim card from the current phone and put it into the new Note 20 Ultra? I really would appreciate the help so I know what I'm doing when the phone arrives.

I got the note 10 plus on sprint and they advised me that since the sim card for my phone and the note 20 ultra are identical all i have to do is swap the sim from my note 10 plus to the note 20 and everything will work. I also bought the unlocked version of the note 20 ultra from Samsung

I was actually told the exact opposite by Sprint customer care last night - they said the SIM is IMEI dependent and we will need a new one, also said that they couldn't ship me one until I had the phone and the IMEI.

Well just as I thought I can't really be prepared, I also called Sprint and one rep said current sim is fine put it into new Note 20 ultra and go to Sprint.com/activate. I called again because she didn't sound confident and this rep told me current sim card is not compatible and they will not have the correct ones until August 21 at best so when I have the phone and the IMEI number I am to call them and at that point they will ship a sim card. I will call again tomorrow and likely get a different answer. It's amazing how dumb they are especially when this is such a routine situation.

Same happened to me. Currently have a Note 10+. Spent an hour going back and forth on chat about wanting it ready to be activated when I receive the N20 Ultra. Then finally called telesales, who also told me I needed a new sim, he checked to see if they had one for the N20 Ultra after I told them it would be unacceptable to have to wait to activate my phone for days after receiving it, he came back and said they have a sim for the n20 ultra and were able to ship one to me which I already have tracking on.

Me thinks Sprint may be pulling a fast one. Not sure what the SIM card has to do with the IEMI of the device. If you have a nano sim card in your current device, I don't see why you would need something special for the Note 20.

I agree. It's ridiculous they aren't prepared and their employees are completely clueless about something that is pretty common.

Maybe they're just trying to make another $10 bucks?

Yeah, its pretty sad. I have a google fi sim also. I plan on going that route if they give me any issues with activation. I'm over dealing with their incompetence year after year.

Sprint has been weird, it is a legacy CDMA issue (when they had no SIM cards) that Spring never got rid of. For some reason, depending on the radio hardware, different phones require different SIM cards (not just a nanoSIM card). While it sounds like a Note 10 SIM is compatible, it wouldn't surprise me if Sprint required a different SIM card to access 5G -- though then it should be the same as the S20 currently uses. This is one of the best things the merger with T-Mobile should eventually fix, with just needing a T-Mobile SIM card to work.

I'll agree the version of SIM card needed has nothing to do with the IMEI, other than to identify the phone model. They will need the IMEI to activate the phone -- Sprint ties the IMEI to the phone line/number; everytime you move the SIM to a new phone you have to contact Sprint to update the IMEI. Again, this is something that will eventually be fixed, as T-Mobile ties the IMEI to the SIM card, so you can move the SIM to a new phone and just have it work.

That must be a Sprint thing......I switch sim cards on Verizon all the time between iPhone Pro Max, Pixel 4 XL and had the S20+ for a while.
Never had an issue with direct from Samsung unlocked phones.

I posted it in reply 7 of this thread, I got mine through telesales as you know. Haven't you spoken to telesales already about this? I'm not sure why they won't waive the shipping fee for you, they didnt even bring it up to me.

The only link for a sim on sprints site I can find is this one, which has a different item number than the one the rep sold me for the Note 20 Ultra. It also charges $10 shipping.

I'll be taking the SIM out of the Note9 I'm trading. Then I'll deactivate the Note10 and replace it with the IMEI of the Note 20. Should work.

Now I actually just received the one the telesales rep ordered for me as talked about earlier in the thread. I'm attaching a pic with the order info from the packing invoice if you need. After opening it and looking at the smaller number on the actual sim, it is identical to the model # on my note 10+. Sprint is clueless. Unlocked Note 20 Ultra-20200810_153807.jpeg

I did talk to telesales and they wanted to charge me $10 for shipping but told me shipping was free if I ordered online. Sigh
