I've had mine for around 2 weeks and this bug is really starting to bug me. It stops and hangs the phone along with the Samsung WatchOn app that gets stuck. Had my Note 2 for a year and never had any of these problems. Wondering if its the bloatware on the phone which is stopping it. I've stopped the S search, taken out the memory card, and plugged it back in. More of a bug with the phone than anything.

If a factory reset doesn't fix the problem, I'd say you have a defective phone and should exchange it. I've used my N3 a lot for a week now with a 64GB card, and have not once seen the Index Service error, nor had the N3 pause or hang.

I'm still having this problem. I've got a new SanDisk Ultra Class 10 32 GB micro SD Card based on some of the recommendations in this thread.
I've done a factory reset. I've reformatted the SD card. I've tried working with brand new PDF ebooks. I've worked with older ones. I've renamed
them so that they don't have any periods in the file names, based on what I read over at XDA's forums.

And I'm *still* getting that pesky Index Service message and the freezing. My Note 2 didn't have those problems. I've stopped the S-search thing,
I've done just about everything I can--even talked to Samsung--who claims they've not heard any reports of this problem...and I'd really like to be
able to read some of my ebooks, even if they do open from the SD card, this freezing thing is getting old, pretty fast.

I don't know if I need to go back to Best Buy and talk to the Geek Squad people or not...but I'm getting pretty tempted to do that and see IF it just
might be a defective unit--but I don't know if it's that, given that there's alot of people reporting similar issues here. I'm starting to get pretty damn
    frustrated with this...

I talked to them for the first time tonight. The girl was pretty clueless. Going to chat via Web with them again tomorrow and have links handy. I'm using a different SanDisk ultra SD card and no PDFs on it and only my mp3s and still getting the same issue.

Going to visit Best Buy too. I'm getting pretty fed up.

I just got my 900L yesterday and had the same problem this morning. "indexService" message kept showing on my note3 every 45 seconds. What I did in the morning was just sync my Dropbox account and transferred 1 GB of song via Kies to 64GB Sandisk microSD which I attached to my phone last night(the problem started this morning)..

Now this problem solved since I read this thread and many people mentioned about PDF. I had some PDF files on my DB. So what I did is unsync Documents from DB. "General -> Cloud -> Documents, then turn off green button"

After I did it, no more indexService message. Then I check battery usage, there are no more Index Service draining my battery(it was using 31% of my batt before I unsync)

    Hope this could help

I've transferred data by cable to my SD card in my phone and then I tried transferring data to SD card via card reader
to another SD card that I swapped into my phone (Both are SanDisk ultra SD cards. And the card that's in my phone
today has absolutely NO PDF docs on it, so that's been ruled out at the moment.

For me the problem starts as soon as I plug the Note 3 into my computer running Kies. That is, WITHOUT actually copying any files to the device -- the message just appears the instant I plug in the cable between computer and phone. From then on the phone freezes about once per minute, then displays the message. (And of course this keeps happening after unplugging.) For me the only solution was to factory-reset the phone, erasing all data, then manually restoring it without using Kies.

Can anyone else confirm that this is how they get "infected" by the problem? The thing is, I was using Kies on Mac OS X. It would be useful to verify whether or not it occurs with the Window version of Kies, but I don't want to try it, then have to spend hours manually restoring my phone. Could someone else verify it?

Also: How to backup/restore the phone if Kies is unusable? It would be easy enough if it was rooted, but my understanding it contains a hardware fuse that detects rooting & voids the warranty? Don't wanna risk that either ...

Hullo there... I'm not using a Mac. I'm using Windows. I'm NOT using Kies. (I've never used Kies. It's never worked for me.) My Note 3 is NOT rooted.
I'm going to be picking up a new phone from Best Buy later today--so I'm going to try something here. I'm going to do another factory reset--and I'm
NOT going to use a cable to my PC. I'm ONLY going to put stuff onto my SD card via card reader and see if that makes ANY difference whatsoever...
I'll return and report in a bit...it's worth a try to see if that step will isolate a potential bug in the works...

ETA: And that doesn't seem to make a whit of difference. PDFs, EPUBs and MP3s on an SD card via card reader to freshly factory reset phone?
Doesn't seem to change anything. Still get the "Unfortunately the IndexService has stopped" error. Not sure what's going on here. I'm going to see
if the Best Buy guys can get one of their people at Samsung on the phone and find out what's going on... that's probably going to be the best bet...

Very intriguing. My N3 -- no USB connection to the computer after the factory reset -- has worked for more than 24 hours now without the IndexService bug, and with the same PDF files on the SD card. Fingers crossed.

Yeah. Curiouser and curiouser... I just reformatted my SD card--again--via cardreader on my PC, and downloaded a handful of my roleplaying game books as 'fresh' PDFs and copied them to it,
and a few other EPUB books from the bookshelf on the site. Going to give this a couple of hours and see what happens, b/c that error usually shows up right away!

I also have had this problem. It started immediately after inserting my card with data on it from my old phone. I was able to solve the problem. I first tried re-formatting the card and reloading all the data. It did not work. I then removed all the PDFs from the card. That did work. I did not have to factory reset the phone. I hope they fix this issue soon as I need access to many PDFs.

Update: I was able to put all the PDF's back onto the card without getting the error. I copied a few at a time rather than all of them at once. I'll update this post again if the error returns.

I've had my Note 3 for four days now. Tonight it started freezing and giving me the IndexServices message but I'm puzzled reading all your posts because my phone has never had an SD card installed. I can't seem to get any definite answers online. It's a shame because this phone is beautiful. Returning tomorrow. :-(

Hi Keith: did you ever connect it to the computer via USB? Or did you copy any files to the phone's internal storage using a wireless connection?

The common thing seems to be the copying files using the USB connection or via a wireless connection (I've not used a wireless one myself, but the USB variety).
I don't have more particulars on your instance, other than you didn't have an SD card involved, Keith. (I work nights, so I didn't get your message until this afternoon.)

Looks like this problem is more related with certain PDF files ( which this index service is not able to handle) rather than SD card. So looking for any particular PDF files recently downloaded or added to device may be a good idea.

Yes, it's related to PDF's but I don't think it's due to any specific version or corrupted PDF. I have around 200 PDFs on my phone now. I only got the index service error after I transferred all of them in one copy operation. The error immediately went away after deleting them. A couple days later I copied all the PDFs back onto the phone (SD card) in batches of 5 files each copy operation over the USB connection. The error has not returned. I have PDF's as small as 5K and as large as 500M. I believe its only related to PDFs because I also copied around 500 other files (images, word docs, spreadsheets) to the phone in one mass copy with no index service error. I have also read on a couple other websites of people having the same issue with PDFs.

I'll bet the indexer is looking inside the files.

I had the problem on a 64GB SD card after I loaded a very large number of small files using the USB connection. I deleted the large directory but still got the error. I put my old 32GB card back and it worked without the errors. My guess is that cleared out the index files for the external SD drive. I then put the 64GB SD back. The 64GB SD still had a directory with a small number of mp-3 files that I had transferred with the USB and it has not given me the dreaded index error. So, my theory is that the Android index routine has a limit on the number of files. It may retain the corrupted index until you put in another SD card to reinitialize it. Then returning to the 64GB card reinitialized the memory back to a clean index without the excessive number of files. So, it looks like you can use USB transfer and the 64GB card for large amounts of data, but NOT large numbers of file. I have written databases and index code, so this is an educated guess, but still a guess. So far so good..

    dear all

just try the following .....move all of your data to your sd card ....then install it in your n3 .....after seconds the index thing will appear ...go to setting and unmounts your sd card without removing it out of your device ....now the index thing disappear ....after a minute remount your sd card ....the card woks without the index error....you have to repeat this every time you reboot your device

unfortunately whith the new 32 gb ultra micro sd sandisk, but it took longer go back , i have the same problems but more spaced, index service stopped and refreezes screenen, although the application does not appears to cause battery drain, thing it was before.
Obviously i think is not a problem to corrupt pdfs, but a problem in operation index service program in this phone with this android 4.3, because this problem never happened in other phones (S3, note 10.1, with the same pdfs files).
I think the problem will be not solved till samsung took a patch to fix it.

It,s a shame that after more than a month, as big a problem as it has not been solved.

I have already extended this problem in various forums and i think the rest should do the same, because as long as people keep thinhing tha N3 is a marvel phone whith no serious problems and willing to buy , samsung did not care to fix it.

Guys, try this: move ALL your PDF to the main storage under .SPenSDK30. You may need to show hidden folders first. This is the workaround that a Samsung tech support advised me. I've done this and so far it hasn't given me the error for 2 days.
