G stands for GPRS the slowest data rate, Edge is slightly faster(and still a form of GPRS).

Re: What's the "G" for?

I've experienced the G on my GNex in the past. It's the Meijer by my house that has the crappy "stand by the front window in order to call or text" reception. My Walmart is just fine. 4G all the way through the store. :D
