I know some have different opinions on this. What are your thoughts?

It's going to depend. If you're constantly using the device outdoors then the device is going to try to amp things up and thus battery is going to suffer. If you're indoors a lot then you'll benefit by it. I say if you are always using your phone outdoors, lower the brightness as low as you can while getting use out of the device, if that setting is higher or as high as auto-brightness, then I'd say leave auto-brightness on. Although, some people generally like the brighter screen and would prefer to just leave it on the highest setting (and then subsequently post threads about their note's poor battery performance....I know DUH right?!?!)

I suppose that would depend on where you intend to have your brightness setting when you switch off auto brightness. If you leave your brightness all the way up, auto brightness would certainly help. Conversely, if you kept your screen dim, auto brightness would use more battery. If you adjust it manually dependent on your environment's lighting, I suppose the difference would be negligible.

I personally use the auto brightness feature since I'm too lazy to adjust the brightness frequently.

I turn off AB and set it 40%. If I need to see outdoors then I crank it up till I can use it without problems. Once finished, I crank it back down.

But TXGTOU said it best with great explanation!

I'm always indoor at home. Working from home. So my battery life is much better compare to when I'm out and it's on full brightness.

I have mine set to auto brightness. Honestly, the battery life is great on the Note 3 compared to the S3 and S4. So much so that I don't even have to set the brightness manually.

I always leave auto-brightness off. I use it indoors or similar lighting more often than not, and I can handle it being turned lower than the phone would set it on its own. Its not hard to turn it up on the ultra bright days outdoors.
