Maybe it's the OTG cable? Try plugging directly into it with a USB to Micro USB cable to see if that works.

Could it just be a power issue? Does the , Note 3 put out enough to power run a drive?

I agree with unicorn, you should try using an usb-hub with external power supply.

I think it will give it enough power. I guess it's file system issue. Which file system is supported by Android devices.?

I'm going to agree with unicorn here. Traditional HDD's use power (lots of it) to run correctly and I don't think the N3 has the juice. Try using a Flash memory card instead to see if it works.

    **update**

Using my external HDD on my N3 doesn't work, although, my WD Passport does. All my flash drives work as well. My Acer A500 can use all forms of external devices correctly.

My guess is that the HDD your trying to use is drawing to much power. Try another device to see if that is the problem.

What is your HDD formatted in? Fat 16/32, Win FS, NTFS? I'm not sure, but I think Android will only address Fat 32 and NTFS.

    It's only Fat 32. NTFS doesn't work.

You need to download Paragon NTFS&HFS+ from the play store. Please note that this app and the other like it require root access.
