Yes. In kitkat just hold down power button. When shut off screen came on there were sound options on the bottom. You could select silent or vibrate then back out of power menu and shut off screen.
I did find an excellent option for those of us with gear 2 watches! Install a widget on phone called silent mode widget from playstore. Now install wearable widgets app on gear 2 from samsung store. Now put silent mode widget into wearable widgets. Now set the wearable widget app on gear to start on double tap of button. Even with phone locked in my pocket I can go to vibrate mode on phone and it works! Easiest way ever to quickly put phone in a quiet mode without even touching the phone!
I wonder if there is a volume up or down widget for wearable widgets that would work when listening to media with phone locked?
