Are older microUSB cables compatible?

I have a cable and car charger left over from my S3, and while they will plug in and charge, the fit is noticeably tighter than with the Note 4 charger. Looking at the ends, they all appear to be the same so I'm a bit confused as to what's going on.

The connector dimensions and specs are the same, but the materials used or a tiny bending on the connector might cause the older one to have a tighter fit. The Note 4 does have a tighter port due to reports from the Note 3 that it was too easy for the cable to come off, but that's on the phone's side, so the cable from the Note 4 should have the same fit as a standard microUSB cable.

Older MHL cables, however, are not compatible. Samsung changed the Pin-out since the S4.
