hey guys, I've been looking into this, and honestly this is just a mess, very little info given to us, and I'm an assistant manager at a Best Buy Mobile Specialty Store. Seems like the biggest question here is whether this will apply to off contract pricing as well. I too plan on getting it OFF-contract as I don't have an upgrade. I received an email last weekend (a couple of days after the pre orders went live) stating that the $200 trade in promo applied to phones that were activated, this was during the Iphone 6 launch week so everything was thrown at us all at once. Since then, the Samsung promo has changed its terms, however on BestBuy.com I did not see anywhere in the fine print that states it must be activated to receive the trade in promo.

I've gone over this with my store GM, and also one of my buddies at corporate, we haven't been able to figure this one yet. I'm sure we'll be getting more details as the launch date gets near, I'll keep you guys posted if and when I hear anything.

Current Note 2 user- Just pre-ordered an un-subsidized Note 4 from the sprint website for $720 and used my old Galaxy S2 for a $26 trade-in value. Will be submitting to Samsung for the $174 difference- $520 for my new Note 4 with not contract (I am 6+ months away from upgrade), not bad!

When I look for the trade in value of an Evo Shift Best Buy's site says there is no trade in value for that phone. What does Best Buy do in that case? I'd rather not trade in a Note 2 if my older Evo Shift will work. The value is $5 through Sprint but I see no minimum value in Best Buy's terms. I am guessing Sprint made a whole bunch of phones $5 just prior to this deal going live to prevent phones older than 2 years from qualifying.

Even if your phone has no trade in value, when we're doing a trade in on our end, it will prompt with different options like "recycle" or if there is a trade in promotion going on, it will give us an option to click on that as well. It doesn't seem that Best Buy requires a trade in value like Samsung does, as long as it's in good working condition; and if it's an iPhone, "find my iphone" must be turned off, IMEI must be clean and not reported lost or stolen as we check those things and go through several several several several steps on iPhones (God, I can't stand iPhones).

Are you saying you can arbitrarily put a value over $10 on any trade in?

Can someone tell me if this offer applies to plan discounted phones? I will be opening a new line of service with AT&T for the Note 4 (2yr agreement has ended with Sprint and I want to move from them) does the $200 discount apply to the $299 new-contract price?

Yes as long as you're trading a phone that has a $10 minimum trade in value.

Thanks for the reply. My HTC EVO 4G LTE is worth exactly $10 to AT&T. Is it even possible to pre-order considering I'm on Sprint and want to pre-order for AT&T? It seems I'd have to set up my new line of service at AT&T today to complete the pre-order.

Update: So I spoke with an AT&T rep who said I cannot preorder without switching my service to AT&T today. Does anyone know a way that I can keep my line of service with Sprint until the Note 4 arrives but still preorder this phone through AT&T?

Pre order on the 16th for in store pickup maybe. It will minimize time without service anyway.

BTW, just thought I would mention that the small print in the BB pre-order paperwork says that the phone must be picked up within 48 hours of email notification that it is available, or the pre-order will be cancelled. If that happens, I imagine you would lose the $200 trade-in offer. I'm sure most people plan to pick theirs up ASAP, but this is an important reason not to delay.

So....does a cracked screen impact any chance of a $200 credit with Best Buy? Will Verizon take it? It is a Galaxy Note 2 and the LED display is fine but the Gorilla Glass is cracked?... so much confusion in this thread..

I have a cracked screen S3, best buy and att rejected it. I ended up bought a Droid X2 and Samsung focus off craigslist for 40 bucks each. Both phones have trade-in value @ $15.

The Samsung rep I just spoke with at my local BB said he checked with the Mobile Specialiats and they said you can't buy outright and get the $200.

this maybe a bit off-topic, but came across this deal over at slickdeals. there is an ebay coupon that will take $5 off $20. when i looked at spigen (i love their neo hybrid for the s4) they had a preorder for various cases for the N4. those preorders were on sale as well. i just purchased the neo hybrid for the N4 for $16.99 + tax in CA + fs.

I spoke with the person at the Samsung booth at BB yesterday and he said the same thing. I went over to the mobile specialist and he knew nothing about the $200 promotion. I sat there while he researched it and asked several other reps who had heard of it, and finally said, yes, I could put my deposit down for $50 and get a gift card I could use for when I picked up my phone off contract if I would like, and that when my phone comes in I can come pick it up and turn over my phone to get the $200 discount when I picked up the phone. They do all the paperwork and no need for me to. The problem now, is reading a post above that says you need to pick up the phone within 48 hours! I will be out of town during the expected availability. Just when I thought I had this thing figured out. I have unlimited data with Verizon and this is why I am buying off contract at full price. But, at $499 it would not be too bad. Thanks. p.s. The iPhone seriously feels like a toy as the person standing next to me said while looking at it on my way to see the Note 4. Color wise, the metal around the phone that has the shiny strip on it would look better on the black one I believe. And the screen, playing the demo videos that come with the phone, is nothing short of amazing. I guess they were filmed in 4k not sure.

This is the problem I have...I think done of the reps may be thinking that it is similar to other trade in promos that require contract. I wish there was a definitive answer now, but there isn't anything in the terms that say the phone has to be on contract. I WILL get that gift card one way or another. But what about at the carrier? Do they require you to buy on contract? Probably not. Because they are just taking whatever your phone is worth to them while Samsung sends the rest.

Just as another data point, I stopped in Best Buy today and asked if I could buy the phone for full price on Verizon and still get this $200, they said no. I guess I'll try to go to Verizon and trade in some cheap phone I get off Craigslist, but I'm a little concerned as to whether that will work either.
