Had issues when I first got my Note 4. Tried it again recently and am having much more success when I press harder while swiping. I was trying a feathery touch; like my finger barely grazes the button. Now I'm more deliberate and it seems to work better.

Regarding the iPhone fingerprint scanner, in theory it probably works better but I don't know if it's faster per say. I have six friends who have either an iPhone 6 or 6 plus and none of them use the fingerprint scanner. They claim it's faster to enter their password. Not sure if it's true, maybe it's more convenient.

I don't bother with it. Since the phone never leaves my side. Will have to pry it out of my cold dead fingers to get access to it and my pistol for that matter.

I recently played around with a friend's iPhone 6, and had her set up my thumb print to check it out. I had access to her phone and my thumb print in it for 4 days and only had to re swipe twice. It was very good. Original reason why I tried setting it up on my phone. Whereas I had my fingerprint scanner activated for maybe 24 hours and ditched it due to frustrations.

I'm going to clear cache on the phone and give it another go. I've been using the pattern unlock and it isn't bad.

Recently got a new case with raised edges on the front and it may give me some trouble as well, so we'll see I guess.

I'd like to keep mine on, but mine's been extremely fickle! It'll work for a while & then I'm swiping 15 freakin times & now I'm kicked out until the countdown or have to enter my PW anyway, really annoying as hell! ! I think this is one of the ONLY features that may be better on the iphx#$, dare I say it?? But I hear the fp scanner is smooth as butter.

I think some people may try to do all 10 fingerprint initial sampling same as each other, but it works much better if you provide it with a little different position for every sampling, so it can learn all of different types that you might swipe your finger.

Ehhh. It has its good days and its bad days. I usually get it on the first or second try but every once and a while I have to swipe it like 10 times. Or just hold it in my left hand and swipe down with my index finger, which always works.
    +1

    girls love tech too

I really don't think this can be stressed enough. If you do it exactly the same for all 10 times you have to do it exactly the same every time after that. It is not the machine training you, YOU ARE TRAINING THE MACHINE. Make it recognise every single possible way you may be swiping. Variety is the spice of life, and as it turns out the Note 4 fingerprint scanner.

It doesn't work well for me but you can make a pattern or use a pin. Those are good options too.

I hated it when I had the S5 and seems like nothing changed. It's easier to set up but when it take 3-4 times to recognize I just don't have the patients.

Perhaps those not planning on using the fingerprint scanner are planing on simply using a password. If my options are a fingerprint scanner that only works if I set up the phone so that it locks immediately vs using a password and setting up the phone to lock after 5 min. dormant or 10 min dormant that is a tough choice. If the fingerprint scanner worked with a set delay then I would opt for the fingerprint scanner for sure. But that does not appear to be the case with this fingerprint scanner. I am just going to have to get the phablet in hand and decide once I can actually see what is what. Without the phablet in hand I am simply not able to decide. I am not particularly thrilled with the idea of the phone having to lock immediately in order to use the fingerprint scanner, not at first blush anyway.
You can set the fingerprint scanner to not re-lock the screen for 2,5,10 minutes etc.

I was about to turn off, but I hadn't tried multiple fingers or long delay before requesting. So far its somewhat annoying...works intermittently depending on how dirty/clean my hands are and especially bad right after washing/shower.

I have tried to use it, but every time i set it up, soon after it goes back to the "swipe" lock screen or the "pin" lock screen that I used before. Just now I had the fingerprint lockscreen, i turned off my wifi, pressed the power button to lock the screen, opened it and it was back at the pin lock screen. Kind of frustrating

Hey, I thought my Note 4 Edge had that same problem. It turned out to be that the timing out on the phone is set to 10min by default. So, if you are anything like me, I was not putting my phone down for ten minutes. I did let the screen go black, but since 10 minutes hadn't passed by, it would not prompt me scan my print to get in the phone. So I changed the timing out from 10 minutes to 15 seconds and it works great. When fifteen seconds go by you have to scan your finger. Hope this helps.

It is all about the set up.
When doing the initial 10 swipe set up use any and all angles.
Doing that I have had no trouble at all.
Another option is to set up multiple prints

I will say I have been playing with an iPhone 6+ and the Touch ID on that has worked like ... 99.9% of the time. Pretty nice. I just wish on the Note 4 I didn't have to swipe on the button... That would help with the failure rate I bet.

Touch Id is fantastic. No swiping needed. Works on the first try every time I see my iPhone friends or colleagues use it. Love my Note 4 but gotta give Apple credit on that front. I swipe my fingerprint to unlock my Note 4 all the time. Like others I may have to swipe two, three or four times to get it to work. Index finger works on the first try most of the time. It's the thumb that requires multiple tries. I'd say it works on the first try about 75% of the time.

Folks may not know that in 2012 Apple swooped in and bought AuthenTec which is the fingerprinting sensor technology company that Samsung and others companies were working with for fingerprinting mobile security. So AuthenTec's fingerprint technology is what powers Touch Id. And of course, I believe the work with Samsung and others pretty much stopped once it became an Apple owned company.

This is probably personal preference, but I set my index finger print to unlock swiping downwards and my thumb prints to unlock swiping upwards. The upwards motion with my thumb felt more natural considering the way I personally hold my phone and I get much more consistent results now.

Thanks for all the replys, I'm gonna give it one more shot using all the angles my 10 swipes will allow & register 3 FP's...we'll see!

I love the phone but I am having a lot of difficulty with the fingerprint scanner. It worked fine a few times but now it never accepts my finger scan. I tried several times to redo it and it scans great and accepts it great but it's not recognizing my scan to unlock. It keeps locking my phone until I put in the password or unlock via samsung acct.
