Ha ha.... 1080 & 1440 was working until the update. Ridiculous! I'll just use it in a browser. Sick of the back & forth.

It doesn't run as well in the browser unfortunately. You can probably get it back by clearing cache/app data. Seems to be hit or miss. Options for 1080p/1440p disappeared for me despite trying everything then one day randomly reappeared. Haven't updated YT since.. Can't believe Google is outright ignoring this.

Both 1080 and 1440 have vanished again for me. I went to finish watching something on Youtube which I started a few days ago and it was in 1080p, last night it was only 720p. Even 480p option has disappeared. I did not update to the latest YT app or did anything to it, must be Google...

    This is good for demo:

Wow this video actually had a 1080p option for me. That's the first. And I didn't even do anything.

Don't know what's gone wrong then. I used to get all the above resolutions but not any more. Looks like Google turned those options off for certain devices.

    Note 4 Is there a 1080p and 1440p play option on youtube?-screenshot_2015-02-07-18-43-22-1-.jpg

I've had the Note 4 since it first came out, through AT&T. Just searched for a timescapes 4k videos, one that is like 1 hour long, and this is the first time I have ever had the option of anything above 720p..., it wasn't 1440p, but 1080p. Happy for at least that! Something is improving!

Try the link below. You should see a 1440p option for it.

Just a word of advice: don't play 1440p on cellular. I just used up over 800MB testing a video.

This is so ridiculous, the back & forth... why can't Google just say what they're up to? Just a short press release or something! I'm just using browsers and ditching some apps like YouTube & Facebook. There has been a slight increase in battery life too.

Thought i'd pitch in that i found the cause for this, posting it around the web.

Long story short, in various regions youtube are capping the resolutions available to devices, especially if they're not sold in that region. This may be accidental. This bug is most common for people who import their phone, or run custom roms.

In my case, i had a G900i and N910G (S5 and note 5) and their respective custom roms changed the model numbers over to G900F and N910F respectively. Both suddenly lost all youtube resolutions above 720p, and the new 360 degree videos on youtube would not work.

using a root file editor and changing system/build.prop allows you to edit the model number your phone reports itself to youtube with - changing those phones back to their correct model numbers or even SM-N9005 (the model of Note 3 sold here down under) and *rebooting the phone* suddenly unlocked youtube to 1080p on the S5, and 1440p on the note 4 (even with the Note 3 model number, which i found odd) and the 360 degree videos suddenly worked.

If you're confused that your phone isn't modded or imported and still suffering this bug, it just means your ISP/telco has connected you to a youtube server that must be located further away than you'd think. changing your DNS servers or using a VPN would be alternatives, although more annoying.
